terracotta tiles and origan pine rafters

I plan to paint the roof beams white but it will cost too much to change the terrecotta tiles on the floor. Can you advise on any innovative ways to brighten and modernise the floor?

I must admit I actually find the tiles are bouncing light? The grey rug looks to be absorbing the light, I'd go for something in a light colour. Dark furniture also absorbs light. Perhaps you could move the piano to another space as it's blocking some of the light?

can you cover the floor?- in the UK we put a carpet over a lot of our floors.

There will however be a point where it is just as expensive to take up the tile and replace with a different tile.

Please don't paint the rafters. The terracotta tiles are lovely but a(nother) nice rug would soften the look.
