Clothes storage

Hi all,

We need to either put a wardrobe or was considering the Ikea ALSO system clothes storage on this wall but I'm finding the alcove very awkward to design around. This is the only place in the room where we can put storage. I was thinking about the Ikea storage system with a curtain across. The wall is 260cm across through to the alcove and the alcove is 86cm wide. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

Hello Brook I couldn't find the Ikea ALSO system online. In theory your idea for a wall unit and a curtain would work especially if you're on a budget. If you wanted longer lasting idea then I would contract a wardrobe specialist to custom build a unit with sliding doors. This would ensure the space is maximised to it's fullest potential and your clothes are well organised for a small space. They will also be better protected in a proper wardrobe.

I would add a rail or several at different levels, along the width of the wall as I think you suggest and add shelves to the alcove. You will be able to store bags, shoes or folded knitwear. It is twice as wide as the hanging space so you will still have access to it and will add a lot more variety of storage space than the last 20/30cm of hanging space.

I would then add the curtain so it sits just in front of the alcove so it's about 90cms from the rear wall.

It is important to think about the actual space you are decorating the room looks relatively cosy so warm colours (reds, oranges etc) will bring it in more yes it will make it cosy but may start to make it feel too compact !!! Cooler colours will help to push the room out but predominantly they can look cold and are used a lot in bathrooms to help maximise the space I suggest something like amonite by farrow and ball

Ikea have a headboard which you can fit behind your own bed and eliminate the bedside units gaining more space for nightstand use and quilt storage underneath. It will give you some more privacy from the window too. Eventually a roman blind would be more appropriate too. The remaining wall at the side of the window can be used for hanging shelving like the ikea kallax. Open the space visually by simply adding a larger mirror to a side wall and hang hats scarves and even coats on pegs along the opposite wall. Use the space above the entryway door for shelving or closed cupboards and fit in a corner wardrobe. If you can remove the door or get it to swing outward. If you consider changing the bed for an underbed storage one it must have a hydraulic mechanism otherwise it is a nightmare. But you can find some storage bags or boxes that slide under the existing bed - just measure properly and try to make the best of the space. Alternatively you could change the bed completely to a high up loft base with a ladder and have ample space beneath it. Check the ikea Stora and others too.

ceiling height approx 2.4 m. we have thought about bunks a long time and simply pushing it off cause were worried boys will be wild on them.. but I guess we have no choice at this point. still hoping to find a narrow one 76cm for a decent price... I still am not sure where is the best place to put it- not too near to window so that we get most sunlight in and safety for the kids. we also don't want them to near to the door- they'll be peeping out and have difficulty falling asleep... have you any wise ideas??? we then need to put cot somewhere and think about storage space... see photos- current situation.

A small thought...when purchasing your sofa,ask if the seat cushion can be made as one single piece. People are simply happier sharing when no one is sitting on the crack. (tee hee) I also prefer tightback sofas in small spaces and lower arms. Less bulk and less barrier' fools the eye. Congratulations on your new digs!Ps-always,always,always measure before purchasing anything. Yes,very basic advice but so often forgotten ...as endless threads here show.

I wouldn't go for the curtain it will look temporary, sliding doors are the way to go. You need a depth of minimum 50cm to get hangers in don't forget. Can you get 2 rails one on top of the other? for all but long hanging? those plastic drawer sets from places like Argos/B and Q are great at the bottom of the wardrobe, store loads of stuff in them?
