Lounge not square!

Hi
Any budding advice gratefully received!
Recently moved into my house & am struggling With the lounge layout. As you come into the room, I have an alcove to the right - currently has radiator on back wall and sofa. I can't get my head around the room is not squared off.

I will be removing the fireplace and knock back the chimney breast as it is false. Also changing the double doors to the dining room to one door and moving it across to the right

But what to do with the alcove? Put a log burner in, house the TV there and some storage and make it the functional corner?

This house layout it is more common than you might think, although it looks as though the previous owner has thrown up a few partition walls..

Your idea for a single door that leads right into the kitchen would make much better use of your living space. When you are able, I'd certainly recommend making the kitchen and dining area open plan.

Lounge wise, I'd probably embrace the space, or lack there of, in the living room, possibly putting the TV etc against the wall when you have removed the false chimney, and put one sofa against against the wall where your dining rooms doors were and another (or two side chairs) against the window so that the seating face one another across the room. You could use the alcove, for a work desk, study area or an additional arm chair if you regularly have more than 5 guests at a time. if you go down the office route, try find a large bureau that will close away and hide all your computer screen etc.

If you prefer a square shaped lounge, I'd look into the option of moving the door from the hall into the lounge back towards the front door, this would make your immediate entrance hall smaller, but certainly help open up that alcove space giving you more living space.

Mine was around the same price but came as unassembled which I'm guessing yours might too so you will have to put it together. It's a bit like a jigsaw puzzle but once you get into the swing of it it's easy. Son had a smaller similar one from Next as a centre light and also 2 wall lights and I was honoured with the job of assembling that too. Mine has a hand remote (which we don't bother with) too. It also changes colour which I didn't realise when I ordered it online but we just have it switched to a plain colour.

Hi there, It would help with an image of your lounge, in order to give you more suitable advice.I can imagine, according to your description, that your lounge is quite spacious, decorated with colourful furniture. From the options you have provided, I would advice to use the LED hoop, as you already have colour in your furniture, I wouldn't advice to have colour in the lighting too. Have you considered other styles that could look great in your lounge? I would love to help you choose your perfect lighting.

Thanks again Tani, it's actually the dining room that is the conservatory. It was another 10k to go further out, which we just don't have, and like Carolina we actually quite like the shape. Carolina; we had thought about that, but currently the middle room ('snug') is a playroom and we've created a utility space under the stairs opposite the cloakroom. The front room is the grown up lounge and has the TV in it. We were looking to create a space that would work for when we have friends over to sit, eat, cook etc so we weren't separated. Will have a good look at the link you've posted :)

Thank you so much! Yes am planning to get the false chimney out to give more space and one door - I like the idea of the armchair in the alcove definitely and when I get builder to quote on open plan kitchen/diner - will check out cost of moving wall into hall!

Excuse the mess (Sunday afternoon!) but I have 2 quite narrow alcoves and we've had to have furniture made to fit. We did have exactly the layout of your room in our last house (minus the false chimney breast) and we had our sofas like yours and a chair in the corner to sit more people. We had a fireplace flush to the wall with our tv above so that could be an option for you too.

If this was my property I would create a wall void and use a pair of sliding doors. The small space that is lost due to the greater depth in the wall would be more than made up by the gain and making them as tall as possible would make a huge visual improvement.

My idea would be to use that alcove and create a big hallway with one door off to the sitting room and at the end of the new hall create a door into the kitchen.

In the sitting room I would then block off and stud partition the doors and make a wall (a sofa can then go on this wall and and under the window opposite OR and L Shaped Sofa (Nabru do ones to fit any space). Having only the one door creates more room to play with and makes a more sociable room.

I would then knock the wall down between the kitchen and dining room and make one big social kitchen diner. Photo attached not sure if it will make sense though
