Need help with my beautiful original victorian tiled hallway.

I need to get a damp proof course done and have been advised by my builder that my lovely hall tiles will need to be removed and the floor can not be saved. Other than a few chipped tiles the floor is in excellent condition. Can I do a damp proof course and keep my floor? What does everyone else do in a 100 year old house?

hi Bridget. Unfortunately it does seem likely the floor may not be saved according to this http://www.buildingconservation.com/articles/tiles/tiles.htm out of interest why do you need a DPC?

The house was surveyed when we bought it and the surveyor recommended a damp proof course, rewiring, re-plumbing and new roof. There must be a way to keep the floor. I cant see damp in the front of the house; I'm not an expert, but I would be loathe to let a builder lift the floor for a damp proof course and then find out next year we could have kept beautiful floor!

Wow what a beautiful house !! That red carpet is soaking up all the light, once that's gone it will make a huge difference. Maybe then paint the stairs white or an old white, or a light coloured carpet. I would keep the Lincrusta, unless you dislike it, it adds period drama and texture, and again paint it off white. Wickes have a surprisingly interesting range of colours too, cheaper than F&B. The curtain probably stops a draught, I would get a huge white vintage French linen sheet, £60ish on eBay, and possibly line and interline it. After all that if it still seems dark, you may consider painting the wood panelling, shame but it could look great ! Also paint the lower banisters the same as the rest !

After living with beige neutrals for about 10 years I revamped my stairs and hallway early this year with lavender walls and the brightest white gloss I could find. Mine is not the biggest space so I took out the pendant light and had recessed spot lights installed. Finished off with a silver grey carpet, although I confess this went completely against everything my friends told me....."dark carpet on stairs!". It looks fab, light and clean, although I am now a strictly no shoes upstairs freak. The floor downstairs is a parquet type flooring in a pale oak colour. I have dark oak in the kitchen and am pleased that I went with the paler oak for the hallway. I finished it off with a white blind at the top of the stairs where the only window is and the space which doubles up as an office. The first picture is taken at night with the spots on and it shines different in the daylight. Overall, I was sceptical when the first coat of paint went on but now I'm quite liking the whole 'purple' effect.

There are two ways of doing that now. The new trendy way is to paint all the doors and architrave, bannisters etc in your contrast colour ie the beautiful slate blue You could use one shade lighter or one shade darker on the woodwork. Or you could keep all woodwork in white / ivory and keep your darker shade for the walls. Either way, Victorians were all about the dramatic and they loved their dark colours! You've also got a fabulous slate grey in there, so you could go with that too. F&B railings is exceptionally popular at present !With either of the colour schemes above, paint that lovely little cupboard in Mustard for a fabulous contrast !

Ok, so I've tried to delete this post as I've just picked up the rest of the laminate and think that the flooring will need to be replaced. The floor level isn't the only issue. Previous owners have welded other tiles to the original ones (which is where the black glue is coming from). Also, we are soon to be running a new mains water pipe through the house and the flooring will need to come up in the hall. We are having a new boiler and pipe replaced because it currently takes 15 minutes to run a bath. I will be contacting a restoration company today to see if they can advise.

We lifted our encaustic tiles and relaid them on a new floor. Most builders will say they can't be relaid as its too much work. We ended up lifting each individual tile ourselves and cleaning off all the grout so that the builder couldn't claim the tiles all cracked when he tried to lift them. It then took him a week to re-lay them but he agreed at the end it was worth it. Stick to your guns, I would either leave the floor or make sure you closely supervise the lifting and cleaning of each individual piece.
