Are these bookshelves custom made? Have looked at achieving similar with ikea bookcases (and failing miserably). They don't reach the ceiling so I am hopeful they are off the shelf (excuse the pun).

Yes, the bookshelves were custom made for the space. It is very difficult to get the same effect from ready made units. I didn't want the units to go all the way to the ceiling so they stop at the same height as the picture rail on the adjoining walls.

I have no say in what happens in the loft library... unless I want to take a book to read, he wouldn't even let me dust the place (not that I'd offer to dust it, anyway :)) I managed to insert a vase and a few prints on top of the bookcases in his office, but as he's buying 4-5 books a week, they're probably have to be moved to make space for these new books. Knowing the pattern from our last house, soon we'll have to have more shelves/ bookcases bought or built. Hmmm... who knew living with a bibliophile will prove rather difficult?

i would keep the shelving central on that sofa wall as I’m not sure you can achieve that look to be honest. Seems complicated. I have a shelf near my boiler but I’ve kept the shelf a couple of feet away so that I can open the boiler cupboard door. Here’s a pic of my lonely shelf and one with boiler cupboard door open. I must admit I do get attacked by the plant sometimes!
