Glazed gables in bedrooms

We are having a new house built with glazed gables in two bedrooms, including the master. How do i dress the windows for privacy, although we are in a elevated position, and sleeping if we prefer blackout or near blackout?

Hi Alison and Rob,

It's tricky to advise without a photo, I'd suggest considering bespoke shutters which should give you near blackout and a really professional, smart finish as shown in the photo I've attached. Some shutters even have built in blinds for almost total blackout!

I think Carolina has worked hard but a professional would lend a different perspective. I think Carolinas suggestions represent a huge step up but getting the window proportions just right is too important to leave to photoshop alone. Since having to apply for planning permission means you have time and don’t need to make a quick decision I would consult a local architect or designer who would also consider the local vernacular and the streetscape to come up with a concept that sits well

I voted ‘hate’ for same reasons as previously mentioned. I think they look better from the inside looking out than from the outside looking in. Don’t like them in a hallway either unless it’s in a secluded area. Same for large walls of glass with the stairs set against them. Who wants to be seen / see people traipsing up & down the stairs in pjs or dressing gown?

We looked at it briefly - I think you need to get the head height for the shower and it really depends on the apex of your roof. I don't think ours was steep enough for it to work without eating into the bedroom space more than we would have liked.

Hi Alison and Rob,

What an exciting project you're undertaking - it's great you're starting to think about the finishing touches already.

As Pavilion Broadway have already mentioned, shutters are a great choice. Because they can be made to fit almost any shape you really can make a statement with your lovely feature window, rather than having to cover it up just because you'd like it to be dark at night.

As for privacy, shutters with louvres will be your best bet. You can tilt these easily, and even opt for a hidden tilt rod if you'd like a clean, uncluttered look.
