Is this an RSJ beam, clad in oak? If so, was it expensive to do?

it is a real beam but im sure you can cladd a metal one as well . we cant disclose clients expenditure im afraid.

Karin, thanks for your suggestion . The bricks surrounding the fireplace and forming the canopy are over 200 years old and each one is handmade. Although you can't see from the picture, each one is unique with different shading, sizing and surface markings. This style is very traditional in the part of France where we live. Where we can, we are trying to restore and retain the original features of the house. If we painted the bricks we would destroy something that took a craftsman almost a month to restore . The bricks had been cemented over at some point in the last 50 years and we rediscovered them when we restored the fireplace . Many of the original bricks couldnt be saved so we toured salvage yards to find authentic replacements. The entire house is over 250 years old so each room and every feature in each room has a different story to tell. The roofing timbers for example came from the hull of a ship and date from about 1700. When the ship was no longer in use the timbers were salvaged for the roof. How they got them here is a mystery. We are 150 km from the sea. That's a long journey by horse and cart.

What a wonderful space...first things first. I would get rid of the small readiator, looks completely wrong. How about a darker colour being added to this wall, as it will complement and pull the room together? Also today you can get sooo many copies of old 4-poster beds or maybe even a modern one, especially as you have the height in the room and this room is just right for a 4-poster! The bedside tables could be painted/paint washed in the same colour as whatever bed you decide to get. Also as I cannot see the entire room, a couple of big armoires would look fantastic, but make sure that they compliment the colour of the bed. Throw one or more Persian carpets down. Add a one or two check of drawers + a desk + a couple of chairs with a small round table between them. Chairs, desk, check of drawers would look great French/Swedish style (have a look at Swoon and Alison at Home). Finally chose you fusions and bed throw, best is to compliment the colour of painted wall behind bed! You have sooo much room in here you could have a ball...and I hope you do...whatever you chose to do, good luck... :) PS! Don't forget a nice big mirror to compliment the furniture... :)

I wood go on a rich navy blue chair, preferably a solid color or if you wish a tartan - let it be a combination with some beige, but it should still be enough blue and dark. And then some grey or grey-blue walls, again a deep color, but much lighter than the chair, to keep the contrast. This combination will give a good contrast and will complement the rustic design and the oak.

How’s the artificial lighting? Have you considered a mirrored splashback behind the oven? I’d put a normal mirror there (whilst the oven isn’t on!) to see what a difference it makes. The curtains and coats also look as if they’re blocking light. Maybe you could remove everything temporarily to see what the light is like? You could also consider something like Dulux light and space on your ceiling which reflects a lot more light than standard paints or I have little Greene intelligent eggshell on my kitchen walls which has a sheen level of 15% (not good for any imperfections in the plaster though!).The wood doesn’t seem to be reflecting much light at all so I’m sure painting them is probably going to help anyway unless you go really matt. Stunning kitchen btw!
