Our new house - decorating the living room

I previously posted a few pictures of our living room before we moved in. I was struggling with what to do with the layout of the room. Everything minus the curtains and two red pictures on the wall is what we have fetched into the house, and we are quite happy where the furniture is now we have them in.
We are now struggling with decorating! It's got to be one of the hardest things in my life.
My partner would like a feature wall over the fire place with quite a dark colour. But I am wanting quite a pastel cream/white look and we're finding it hard to both decide on colour and do no know where to begin .... Any help or guidance would be muchly appreciated!

IF YOU LIKE WARM AND TRADITIONAL THE WHOLE ROOM COULD HAVE GONE RED, BUT YOU NEED TO USE THE RIGHT RED, I WOULD SUGGEST USING FIRED EARTHS MADDER RED IN ACRYLIC. THE COLOUR HAS A PINK UNDERTONE AND IS SO CLASSY, USING ACRYLIC GIVES A CLASSY SHEEN WHICH REFLECTS LIGHT OFF THE WALLS. I WOULD PAINT THE FIREPLACE WHITE. I WOULD KEEP THE SOFA'S GET LAURA ASHLEY CUSHIONS AND SOME NICE THROWS FROM TK MAXX. I WOULD LAY ENGINEERED LIGHT OAK OR LAMINATE FLOOR, THIS WOULD AGAIN BOUNCE LIGHT. BUY A PRETTY LIGHT FITTING AND PUT FULL LENGTH SHEER CURTAINS AT WINDOW, IKEA HAVE SOME GREAT ONES. PAINT TABLE WHITE. IF YOU DONT WANT RED GO COASTAL COTTAGE WITH A SEA SIDE VIBE WITH BLUE AND WHITES. LAURA ASHLEY COASTAL STYLE WOULD SUIT THE SPACE WITH ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE. Comments (4)Hello Hannah, Do you have artwork already? Are you looking to get some bespoke pieces? Or purchase some select pieces? Do you have a theme, subject or genre in mind? Oh, the questions keep coming! Really, the most important question is: Do you wish to theme your room around the colour and style of your sofa and arm chair, as you already have these? Ultimately, whatever you're answers are, you need to firmly fix in mind some key pieces of furnishings that you REALLY love, then build your room around those key furnishings. Once you've established an "anchor" to build on, every decision you make on decorating that room will be so easy! As Matthew said if you can get the ceiling skimmed. I would go with white walls (or a very pale grey) and add just a little raspberry with some green. Ignore style but see the colour combos on the pics. When budget allows I would also get a rug to tie the sofas in together with maybe a low glass coffee table. Again, when budget allows I'd change the curtains for either shutters or blinds. I personally wouldn't do a feature on the firewall as it extends to the stairs. 8 years agoThese were a couple of samples that we have had out eye on. I think more of a floral pattern. I quite fancy the darker style floral but it's just a case of persuading him!
Hopefully we will be able to post some pictures once we've decorated

8 years agoThanks for your great advice! Iv attached a picture of the bottom of the stairs where we were thinking of taking the paper up to. We had had in mind about having the TV over the fire place but not so keen now so might just buy a separate unit for that. All advice welcome. Thanks guys
