Mist coat - any good?

Hi
Can any of you seasoned painters please tell me if this looks about right for a mist coat done by our painters. Have never had any painting done before and not sure what to expect?

Yes - ' looks the same as every time I have had it done.

Bare plaster is porous and so you need to put on a first coat that is watered down and the wall will absorb some of the water. The end result looks patchy but the wall is sealed.

Does it matter that there are patches in some rooms above where a skirting would go that are unpainted?

Not really Adrian, no. You shouldn't use any other finish such as eggshell, soft sheen, silk etc due to the substrates high porosity so that leaves you with Matt emulsion. There are specific new plaster primers but they are often costly and unnecessary so yet again that leaves you with Matt emulsion. You can water the paint down to 80 percent water, 20 percent paint if you wish or 10 percent water and 90 percent paint - it really doesn't make much difference as long as the substrate is sufficiently primed. The purpose is to prime the new surface so 50/50 is ideal as it blocks out the plaster colour but that doesn't leave you needing to increase your top coat anymore then you need to to block out the white emulsion. All of this is available in any basic decorating book or even google. Don't take it personally but I see you give some really strange advice on here and a lot of it is incorrect which costs people time and money.

I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . This is my kitchen, it is so much lighter and more space . The back board is the same as the work top , so no tiles to grout .

Hi Justin, thank you for taking the time to reply to our query. It is difficult to compare systems because Deceuninck have not published very much technical information about that specific product on their website, but whilst in general terms uPVC may be able to perform fractionally better for U-values than aluminium (it depends on the system), our experience is that with slide and swing doors the weather rating (water tightness, air permeability and wind loading) tend to be much lower. I would also query the information you were given about security. The reason I say that is I cannot find any reference to their slide & swing doors having been tested to PAS24 standards (Building Regs Doc Q) or Secured by Design award standards. The technology of slide and swing doors is developing quickly, but it is starting from nearly 25 years behind bifold doors so will take some time to catch up - that said they are moving along quickly and in certain circumstances offer an alternative to bifold doors. Rough coat render and condensation advice

It turns out that we need to remove the render and either replace with lime render or repair the bricks underneath. Trouble is, we have an extension which wasn't built by us. Any ideas how we would know if it's brick or blocks under that part of the render? The footing is exposed and is brick. Would this mean it's brick all the way up? Interested to know how we could blend the old building with the new. Can you put lime render on blocks? Also have been told by a damp specialist that we should pull up the concrete floor and replace with a suspended wood floor and air bricks. This would allow for ventilation and help prevent damp travelling up the walls. Would rendering in correct render allow for the walls to breathe enough? Pulling up the floor seems very extreme! He said the concrete floor is likely to have damp as it can't breathe - is this likely to be true? I thought damp under the floor would be caused by leaking pipes etc. Although I get what the guy is saying about a suspended floor as that's how the building was built, I'm not sure how much I trust his conclusion! He didn't even look at the damp before saying to remove the floors...just how the building was constructed. So confused what to do! Any advice would be appreciated. My head hurts from trying to decide on the best cause of action!

Yes that's fine as well where the skirting is, although in places it still seems a bit high for the unpainted bit - really depends on the height of your skirting - looking at the photo, I would assume you will be putting a skirting of around 6".

Actually I would probably say that is not a decorator. Sorry but I can see misses and I can see where he hasn't applied it evenly.

First coat should cover the entire area evenly, with no misses and no light patches.

You can often spot a fake decorator a mile away if your one yourself. Either that or he's not very good.

You don't have to paint the area where the skirting goes, presuming the skirting definitely covers that area. I usually leave a 2" gap along the bottom just to make sure

Just noticed that you can see he has also changed direction when rolling.

You should roll from top to bottom to apply it equally and evenly. You can see he's curved his roller.

I know it's only a mist cost but realistically you should apply the 1st, 2nd and 3rd coat the same way...so I wouldn't hold much hope for when you add colour, sorry.
