hi all, update is I have finally found a photo of someones stairs done in Brintons timorous beastie yellow Ruskin butterfly and its made me decide we are definitely 100% going for this as I love it (see attached pics) on stairs and landing... Floor in hall will be oak herringbone parquet, just wall colour to decide and we have bought new tall skirting so colour to paint this also? i have attcahed apic of the hall currently so you can see our front door with stain glass.. As Ive mentioned before the banister and spindles will be replaces with square spindles with an oak top banister and oak end cap - similar to this houzz pic ... So just to deicide on wall colour and new skirting colour... I really like f&b light blue in a hall with oak parquet but I don't feel this will go with the carpet... Kitchen and dining room will be one of the sage shades and lounge Wimborne white and downpipe...

We're going through the same as you as we are having to replace our very expensive sisal runners with their beautiful black taping after only 5.5 years. Would strongly recommend against sisal anywhere, but particularly on the stairs. Any dirt, spilt drinks, splashes of water result in stains that even professional carpet cleaners cant get out. The pile is too short and it all gets embedded in those lovely ridges. They shrink away from the skirting board quickly because they cant be pinned down like normal carpet so it quickly looks tatty and we're only 3 people including an unusually clean and tidy child. We also had narrow and shallow stepped stairs in our previous home (a Victorian semi) and like you removed the carpet, painted and introduced a runner - which looked fab. The one thing I would add to what has already been said is to remember the context of the space; 1) the stairs will get a lot of use and foot pounding and a pale runner will quickly show this...it isnt dirt from shoes that would show, but bobbles from dark socks will quickly get trampled in and making keeping your stairs looking beautiful a lot harder than it should be. 2) don't be afraid of adding a stripe runner which will draw the eye to the top of the stair and create the illusion they are a good deal grander than they actually are. I would recommend something like grey stripes which will keep the calming special effect, plus create height and stop the stairs feeling intimidating. If you do add bars remember that this can eat into the foot space of each step. We went with Art Deco clips which looked amazing but didn't make our shallow steps any more hazardous than they already were. Whatever you chose I'm sure they will look great!

You can use a jelly based paint remover which you apply and scrap off. It was traditional to paint stairs like that until the 1960's. The white gloss border was to allow you to see the stair in poor light (candles), the later brown colour was in fashion in the 1960's when you had a runner of carpet with the brown at each side of the step. On saying all that I would carpet them and save you all the work :)
