completely stuck what to do with our lounge

We're finally moving all of the toys out of the main lounge and going to redecorate to make it more of an adult space. We also HATE the fireplace and want to get rid of it / do something with it. However, budget is quite tight. So, here are some of the options we've been thinking about:

New sofas (we like idea of a blue corner sofa)
New colour scheme (yellow & blue)
Wallpaper on the back wall (behind the red sofa)
New curtains
Get rid of the fireplace completely, paster over it, put the TV on the wall, new TV unit, recarpet etc.

I would LOVE some help on this please. We've not got a great eye and don't easily get this stuff.

Hi Lucy. I've just had a look at your Ideabook to envisage how you wanted to use the yellow and blue and all the rooms are grey or very neutral with either just painted walls or textured walls. Do you have an idea of how you want it to look? What kind of blue for the sofa and how were you planning on using the yellow? Which way does the room face and how much light does it get? I know budget is tight but do you want to retain a focal point in the room, perhaps a cheap fire? Is the door by the tent used or do you use the dining room door?

Hi Lucy, I had a look in your ideabook too but same as Minnie I felt none-the-wiser, as what you have in there is different to want in the room. What sort of feel or style do you want? I don't know what direction your room faces, or what time of day it was in the picture, but the room seems a little dark in comparison to the dining room through the doorway. I would keep the walls light and neutral - either an off white or a very pale grey with a bit of warmth in it. Add colour in the accessories - cushions, rug, art etc. You mention a new carpet but maybe continue the wood floor you have in the dining room and add a rug (which is where you bring in some colour - love the Stockholm rug in yellow from ikea or loads of choice on wayfair.co.uk). Were you thinking yellow or blue for the wallpaper and what sort of style? Cole & Son cow parsley is gorgeous in yellow (but pricey) and there's a Rob Ryan design that's been turned into wallpaper that comes in yellow that is gorgeous. Your fireplace isn't too bad, I think painting the mantle shelf white and painting the wall a similar colour to the stone will make it blend in. Is it an open fire? Will you have to get chimney sealed off etc?

Hi thanks very much for the useful hints and tips, they've really helped! So far I've done a subtle re-jig of the decorative items on the shelves and thinned them out a bit to make it less busy (and more contemporary). I have added a cushion and throw plus a bit more useful storage baskets and so far I'm happier with it now. I also have to consider the overall flow of the room rather than 1 wall - for example when I walk into the room this wall is on the left and the sofa wall is on the right, and there was a risk that if I added shelves etc on this wall it would then unbalance the look of the room as the sofa walls are so far pretty plain. I'm getting a new sofa next month and when this arrives I'll be able to see the room in its finished form and can make any last minute adjustments!! I want to add some more shiny stuff and will get a nice chrome tray or centrepiece for my glass coffee table. Pffft, this house decor lark can take over your life sometimes :))

What a stunning transformation and glad you managed to keep the walnut flooring. My favourite part of the room is the mirror above the fireplace as its really unusual. The whole room fits very well together and is nice and bright and agree with molly20100 that is is very inviting. Would be good to see your next room!

Hi compo73, thank you. I had to try and remember then, it was at a Grand Designs exhibition at the Excel centre about % years ago. But if you go to love-your-home.co.uk you will see very similar, thats where I think it was from.

I love Jonathans ideas. The space is amazing but looks a little stark. I like this image below because of the contrast between the strong modern architectural elements and the crafted textural cosy living space. In this case the grey and the black wall brings the whole space to life, as does the warm dirty mustard colour and the wicker and wooden elements. Your kitchen would lend itself very well to a similar palette. Even seeing those cardboard boxes against the wall would suggest that it might look better a deeper colour. Huge rugs such as the one below are easily available now, even oversized ones are competitively priced. You could also cluster some low pendant lights to one side. Low wide buit in units either side would bring the space to life. One final thing, another reason the space above works is that everything is repeated. The black lights and the black wall, the mustard stools, cushions and pouff, the copper and cognac sofa and table etc. You could the same by having a huge cream textured rug and cream and mustard cushions, a similar pouf and then bring the same into the kitchen.

Hi,

If fireplace is used for decoration purposes only then i would go ahead with eliminating from your space and make it more into usable area. However, if it is in working order i would definitely keep it and make it a focus point of a room and use it on those cosy adult relaxation days/nights. If you will be going ahead with blue theme i would suggest looking into finishing techniques that can give you amazing effects even in dark/small spaces. Also, once plaster boarded, i would decorate the chimney wall into amazing feature using Venetian plastering mimicking marble with golden effect (potentially to be used on some of the walls).
