POLL: Doorbell or door-knocker?

I'm always so pleased when the doorbell rings, mainly because it usually means something's arrived for me or a friend is here! But the noise itself (if electronic) can be a little annoying and a part of me prefers the simple knocking of a door knocker.

So, do you have a preference when it comes to your door - doorbell or door knocker? Vote and let us know!

i like the look of knockers - but... we have a boundry-gate, thus, the front door is not knock-able & at present our bell is out of order. leaving stones as the only viable option...

We have a tiny ship-shaped door knocker, on a wall, due to our security door. The postie thinks its hilarious. It works, though.

Living in the country, the wreath makes itself, almost, I usually make the framework from vines, either the exuberant Russian vine or as this year the ornamental grape "Brandt" which has a very stable structure. Both of these can be roughly braided and formed into a wreath. Leave them a week or two to rest and harden into a good circle. Next I stuff into it, a combination of greenery. Sometimes the silvery greys of the flower garden, or deep greens of the forest. Then I collect the charms of the hedgerow and vegetable garden, seed heads, of all sorts and sometimes a few faded hydrangea flowers. Long strands of Ivy are useful for binding everything in if you are not adding a string of lights. I enjoy filling out the wreath over a series of days or weather opportunities. Every year it is different and I love the way it reflects the recent growing season.

Thanks Rachel, funnily enough you picked out 2 pics I saved to my ideas book. The 1st is what I started with as I love the solid tongue and groove doors but I'm a little worried about how dark it will make the hallway. This was also the pic that made me think of matching my door and windows funnily enough. The next pic is this door I chose, painted in my window colour and with clear glazing, which I want too. Maybe I will risk the dark and go for the tongue and groove, just with panel through the middle so I can add the mail box? Its a lovely look for sure. Thanks for taking the time to look at these for me, I really appreciate your opinion.

Carolina: just seen your window treatment photo- it didn't come up on my phone for some reason. I do like those half shutters in the bay window. Not so keen on the roller/roman blinds upstairs because they necessitate choosing colours. The rooms are currently occupied by my grownup daughters who I'm trying to ease out! So I don't want to 'decorate' them too much as it might send the wrong message!

I love a simple doorbell and recently wanted to fit one at our new ArchitectYourHome offices. However when I went to the DIY store, they only had horrid door "chimes" - lots of different ones, wireless ones, different tunes - all ghastly. Managed to buy a simple doorbell with a battery on-line (apparently it's called an 'underdone' bell - nothing to do with Mad Max I assure you). It makes a pleasing drrrrringgggg

I think a house is more welcoming with a doorbell- it pleasantly announces one's arrival. When I use the door knocker I feel like a debt-collector and almost apologise to whoever answers for the disturbance. I do believe however, that the sound of the doorbell should be heard both inside and out to avoid the embarrassing situation of repeated pressing and exclamations on both sides of 'This thing's not working!' and 'What sort of idiot is this?!' followed by attempts of glossing over it all when the door finally opens.

najeebah,I don't do visitors,too uncomfortable for me,so if I had a doorbell I would take the batteries out lol.

Both - a knocker for the look and a bell for practicality - also because we have a gate at the bottom of the drive so a knocker is pretty much useless - LOL

Always a knocker! We find that door-bells have a tendency to die and the owners are unaware, and if you try to knock with your own hand- well your knuckles feel like they're going to break.

We have a knocker and a doorbell, but everyone knocks the window!!! WHY?!?!? That's only helpful if I'm in the lounge!!!

Laura, place a thin, transparent, very brittle sheet of some shatterable material over the window to discourage that.

I don't know of any suppliers off the top of my head, but just did a quick web-search and found this one, which is horrid shiny brass, but it might be possible to have it "antiqued" or "patinated" to a similar finish as the picture you are referring to. The trouble is that it is nigh-on impossible to re-create the effect of decades of natural aging.

Probably your best bet to get a really good example will be to troll through the various architectural reclamation yards, but this will take a great deal of leg work. Try places such as Walcot Architectural Salvage in Bath:

On closer inspection, I am not entirely sure that the one on the link I gave you is actually real brass (the price suggests otherwise) and therefore it might well not be possible to do much with it. I am sure that you could find a solid brass one out there though with a bit of a look.

I particularly love the white button on it...most I'm finding are dark. And I'm having a heck of a time finding non-illuminated doorbells too. We're building a new old house, and I definitely don't want to see a lighted doorbell near our front door :-/.

We have a doorbell right now but in the next house people won't be able to get past the gate so it will be via a security system. However, the front door will still have an old fashioned door pull bell and a large ornate door knocker.
