Glass balustrade on stairs?

Hi, we're doing a loft conversion in our bungalow & need to decide on the style of the staircase. The hall will be a decent size - 4.5 m x 3.3m. We're wondering whether to go with a wood and glass balustrade or plain spindles. The floor will be a pale oak poss with a grey tone. My concern is cleaning the glass! Does anyone have problems with glass balustrades & wish you hadn't bothered? Is this some kind of protective finish which would help? I'm not against cleaning but don't have the time to polish the glass on a daily basis! Thanks in advance.

if you have small people in the house who walk down stairs leaving finger marks then steer clear of the glass. Adult only houses don't seem to have the finger print problem!

Thank you - that's my main concern! Our children are 7 and 9 - not small as such but still likely to finger mark the glass.
Does anyone else have glass balustrades with children? Any further ideas / advice appreciated! Thank you.

I would go for satin every time, particularly if it's a DIY decorating job. Gloss has to be perfect when applied or every blemish shows up when the light hits it, whereas even a less than perfect finish in satin is visually more forgiving. Also avoid oil based paints like the plague, as even the best of them start out white and yellow quite quickly. Water based acrylic paints don't yellow and can be touched up if damaged without colour difference.

The new wood appears to have a grain - wondering whether you could do a treatment which makes the new wood very pale/white but which allows the stain to show through - think this would be more interesting a softer than painting them solid white

Although I am all for reusing what you already have I think in the long run you will find it easier to remove existing and start all over again. Trying to fit new parts to the existing might be more trouble than it’s worth and likely more expensive. My reasoning behind this is that, unless you go for bespoke, it would appear that stair parts seem to come in kit form. I mean fixed distances between components etc. Your stairs will likely be imperial and the new metric. Then again I might be totally wrong!

Hello tamp75,

We often install glass balustrades in family homes as they offer a great safe and clean looking solution however cleaning will always be an issue when it comes to glass. The great thing is that there are good products on the market that make it very easy to keep on top of the cleaning but it will be an ongoing exercise!
