I am in the process of redecorating my dining room with a shabby chic decor in mind. I would like to paint the table, chairs and bookcase white and distress it however my husband prefers wood in its natural state. I have bought new roman blinds in duck egg blue with a white and ivory print, I am struggling to decide how to dress the table to match. I will de- clutter the bookcase and am considering putting a console table next to it. I am also considering putting either a shelf or picture above it. Any ideas would be gratefully recieved.

Hi Karen. I saw your post and thought that you might consider using either placemats or a classic table runner to style the dinner table.You can see some of what I have in mind in our Houzz project here (scroll down to the placemats and table runners). They are all made from recycled leather and thus have a natural, simple and durable texture. Best of luck :)

Hi Linddna, Thank you for reading my post and suggesting s lovely idea. I did think of a white linen table cloth with a patterened duck egg table runner, but I love the fact that the one that you suggested has a natural, simple texture.

The wooden mirrors were good but IMO I think it will be too much wood with another wooden console. It could however work depending on what you do with the accessories. Or you could look at something like this but bigger? For the console, you try tables lamps with a patterned ceramic vase in the middle with flowers or an urn with a plant. Or a collection of ceramic jugs with a stem in or jam jar type vase. Vintage or Mercury glassware also looks nice as does a candelabra or candlesticks. Just make sure things are of differing heights. For the bookcase, could you clear 2 shelves and add a collection of mismatched pastel crockery that could include cake stand, milk jug etc? Maybe a small collection of clocks on the walls or vintage tea plates in different patterns. I would have a look around local antique or secondhand shops for inspiration. If you want anything new maybe try Dibor or Live, Laugh, Love.

Thanks for the comments. This is a pic of the conservatory. As you can see, it feels set on the side of the house. We could either take away the doorway between kitchen & utility, remove the tall oven/microwave tower & combine that space with existing door to conservatory to make double width. Probably easiest but It still wouldn't integrate it into the kitchen very much. Alternatively we could make a more central double door width opening in the kitchen wall. really opening it up, but losing hob & lots of storage. We could then maybe block up the existing door from the utility room.

Wumi Hello Wumi, good to get your input as you are a Houzz celebrity! I’ve read lots of your posts on here and liked your ideas. Thank you for the floorplan. I like the kitchen in the lounge space. I’ve seen the front room as a snug and it is small considering it would be the only lounge space. I’m going to see if I can get a ballpark cost to build a proper room in place of the cons to use as a lounge. I think that will be the decider as to whether all the living space can be moved to the back and the study could go to the front. Do you think there would be room for a table in your kitchen plan?

That’s very clever Marina. I love the snug . I had a bit of a rearrange of our existing furniture yesterday and think I’ve convinced them to have an l shaped sofa by the window and in front of the fire. We’ll use the space on the left wall for the office and also have some space for our daughters to do their art and school homework. The existing sofa and cabinet are pieces that we brought back with us when we moved from Florida back to the UK, and to be honest, they have always been a bit too big for a UK home. Because of the conservatory (which has internal thermal panelling, the room can be a bit dark, so instead of the dark partition, do you think something like glass bricks would work?

Hi Karen,

two things immediately came to mind when I saw your images. Firstly, I would leave the table as it is, by painting it in a conservatory where there can be a lot of light can fade the paint in different places on the table over time. Have you thought of maybe just changing the chairs for an chic-er look. Maybe various shapes and colours sourced from your local tip or second hand store? You could maybe have a set of white wooden chairs sourced from IKEA for example.

Also, the corner where there is a tin of paint, I would move your Yukka into that space instead. It looks too cramped on the right hand side.

Again with the table, I would leave it bare ( less is more in a conservatory, due to fading and the fact the you don't have much space to play with) . I would place three glass jars on your table with a little sand in the bottom of each and a church candle.

Finally, the piece de la resistance the lighting. You could change that for a real statement piece which would look amazing and bring everything together.

There are some amazing chandeliers out there that are also very inexpensive.
