Need Help with improving kerb appeal!
Comments (66)Hi All, Here's an update. The hedges have settled in nicely over the last 4 years (has it really been that long already?!) They had a trim at the weekend, not the best time of year to cut Phontinia I know, but they had gotten a little out of control.. I intend to add a gate over the next few months and continue to plant the beds along the house. They currently have hydrangea and French lavender plants (oh and the odd azalea) in them but need more. Also going to plant a border of box around each of the beds the trees on the lawn are in - hence why these look a little scruffy at the mo.. I've considered growing something on the walls, but still not sure what or how. Each summer I add two hanging baskets either side of the front door - which help break it up a little. Still very much a work in progress (aren't they always ;-) ) but I like it. Thanks for all the comments, ideas and suggestions - much appreciated!...See MoreCurb appeal help please
Comments (40)Tanks all so much for these amazing ideas!! I think once I have implemented these the overall look will work - I just need to picture the final result as I do each bit separately. @south Wales - I had considered grass but the front of the house is covered by a huge oak tree canopy in the summer, the tree would probably dry everything out. It blocks most of the direct sunlight out completely. Do you think grass is still achievable? @suesykes - yours looks amazing, is that a rhododendron I can spot? @michaeldbutler - I used an iPad app called color effects @sorayasohal - thanks for your great ideas, I am very keen to use a couple of potted plants in front of the pillars. I just need to make sure they don't get stolen! @arthur road - many thanks for this excellent list, I hadn't really considered using a variety of different plants as the bed is small, but it's a great idea! @ensign - I wanted to use a taller tree each side of the pillars but the drive is on a slope and it might look a bit lopsided. I wonder if there is a way I could correct this by digging out and leveling under each pot or would this look weird? @amanda hunter - it's a great tip looking at local house styles! Mine is quite modern (1996) and is situation in a lovely village with quite a lot of older style houses with authentic wood doors etc. sadly this is a composite door and I added this as the wood door which was on the house was in a terrible state, so my options are limited to having it sprayed a suitable color. So far I think I will: 1) add flagstone path 2) lower globe buxus type pots in front of each pillar 3) paint door (still wanted red) 4) use some of the plants recommended here and go to my local garden centre. The porch also has built in flower beds flanking the steps so once flowers are in there it will look good. The darkness of the north facing house sheltered by a large oak tree is an issue for me, the house looks great but looks dark and gloomy, hence I don't want to have a door that looks too dark and dull, unless it was black. The company who will be spraying the door can do all farrow and ball colors, so I am going to check out some more heritage colors as per Laura and other suggestions. I'm going to get some blue and red samples this week!!...See MoreKerb appeal
Comments (21)I feel your pain......................this is why i am now a Handyman and not a property developer!! - Too old, too much pain (mental and physical ), just no get up and go, it's all got up and gone! p.s I don't think it needs a full re-furb - it's lovely. I'm pretty sure it's just that utility door and the front door issues. I don't think the planners could have an objection to adding to the wall as is and including gates, in fact, I don't think you need permission. Neither would itaffect the ability for the road users to see what's coming on the main road. This is the rule for walls:- Planning permission is not required provided that: 1. The wall or fence is not more than 2 metres in height anywhere on your property except where it adjoins a road or footpath. In this case the height is restricted to 1 metre I think you're right about buyers seeing the potential change of layout, and if you can show them a plan and sketch when they're viewing I think it would help. Comments (19)I’m surprised noone has suggested grey uPVC windows yet. They always seem to be a favourite on here. 😖 If the facade is flat, you need relief but your options depend, as usual, on your budget. The biggest impact would be from replacing the windows but set them back in their recess by 2-4”. Pick a more interesting style with smaller panes to creat interest. You would not believe what a difference that would make. Rendering the whole front would just flatten the it more and actually make it less interesting but rendering or cladding a corner might help. Rendering just around the porch means rendering and painting the area that is most easily damaged by high traffic so guard against that. It also risks making the house look dated so I would avoid that approach. Installing a porch and or bay or bow window would bring elements forward but pick compatible styles and don’t mix them, ie traditional OR contemporary. Lowering the top of the retaining wall to path level would reduce the impact of another dominant flat plane. You could also use trellis or panels to break up the surface and encourage climbers, either in front of the walls or onto them. Planters on top of the retaining wall with hedging or tumbling plants could look great. It looks a nice house and with some careful thought could look wonderful but don’t risk spoiling it by going over the top with every idea. Good luck and enjoy your lovely home....See Moretelljojo
