New home - new kitchen!

This is our new kitchen, we'd appreciate any ideas on what to do to it (on a budget!). Initial thoughts are to just do cosmetic changes at first to keep costs low(ish) staying quite neutral - whites or greys... and maybe making a bit of feature of the external wire trucking (all pipes and wires are external throughout the flat). Let me know your ideas!

WOW, all great suggestion. I feel a bit redundant in any additional comments ... but I will jump in anyway ;-)

Budget: how much? Where would you like you ££ to go? Lighting could really make a difference and a pendent or a wall light above the working area is both stylish and useful. how much work are you willing to take on?

The external wire tracking are not particularly pretty so unless you go for a groovy industrial look as suggested by Minnie, I will try to blend them in with the scheme rather then draw attention to them.

It's a compact kitchen so keeping it light as St James Interior suggested, is a good idea. Dark colours on the walls will bring them closer making the room feeling smaller.

Whatever look or suggestion you go with make sure you have a plan. Write it all down, take colour swatches and samples when you go shopping and look at how things work together. It's very easy to fall in love with one item's look and discovered that it just does not go with the rest. Good planning save money!

You will probably need also some shelfs for spices and hooks, light under the wall unit on the right hand side of the photo you post and maybe a dish rack by the sink. These are all elements that will be in full view and will contribute to the final look of the room.

I attached a quick sketch board for inspiration. If you love one of the looks suggested by St James Interior, take your time with the purchases. Do not compromise of what you want, it may take longer to achieve it but it will be worth it. The kitchen is one of the the most used room in the house, make yourself happy!

I would do the exact opposite to pale grey or white because you have the black which will contrast to a bright zingy colour. There is this fantastic acid green colour but for the life of me I can't remember the name. Anyway, you could do the walls this bright acid green and add a few purple or navy accessories such as a blind, couple of plant pots, kettle etc. We did my sons bedroom this green with navy curtains and bedding and all woodwork/cupboards etc white and it looks absolutely stunning. My sister loved it so much she did her kitchen in the same colour and added the purple accessories and we are just extending our kitchen and it's going to be the same green with white and pale grey accessories/cupboards/worktops etc. I have planned the whole design around this green as I must have it in my kitchen,

Hello Zara,

You could decorate your kitchen by adding some decoration, accessories, mix and match colours. I could see some yellow, blue, white but definitely not dark shades, no grays or black.

When it comes to styling it is entirely up to you, how would you like to see your space, and you got to think what is your favourite style. That should be your starting point. You can mx different styles together and you will still have a brilliant outcome. With a bit of creativity and imagination a lot can be achieved.

You could also think of lighting installation, there are a lot of varieties . Why not add a pendant lamp or led lighting installation under the wall cabinets?

Cover the walls with some wall art, framed image or poster to give more life to your space.

The kitchen is very tricky not knowing whether you can reuse any of the cupboards and worktop... Move the washing machine to utility and install cupboard. Move the oven to the left of where it is now. Install shelves on the back of the kitchen wall. I'd keep the dresser where it is. If you did have to get some new units maybe consider a U shaped where the bin is now, you can always mix and match. The dining table can probably be swung the other way and moved away from the wall. There's a 4ft gap between the edge of my table and base units which is fine. I'd get 2 x 2 seater sofas and have them at right angles to the fire away from the walls with a coffee table in the middle. I'd get a smaller tv, sorry.. Leave the tv on the right wall but put in a cupboard door on the left alcove to match. This does mean you can only watch TV from one sofa though. If that's a problem then try an L shaped sofa on the left hand wall if you're facing the fire. Either of these options should leave you with room for cabinets against the walls for storage. Are the windows deeps enough to use as window seats?

Hi Claire, When you’re looking at concept planners or interior designers I would begin by looking at a selection of people. It’s important that you find someone who you get on with (that are on the same page as you from the start), as the entire process goes on for quite some time and you go through a lot with this person. It’s also important to get a few quotes and make sure you get lists of what you get for your money - as almost every pro does things slightly differently. They should all start, as Jonathon mentions above, with an in depth at your requirements and needs for the space as well as the property itself. Having all this information means we can then tailor a layout specifically to you and how you’re going to use the space. I personally begin by offering 3-4 different layout options with pros and cons. This gives you lots of choice and helps you to think about the space and to analyse it more clearly. I hope this helps. Dear all, many thanks for your wonderful support. We are scheduled to move in Jan 12, and sorry to say, but we decided to postpone our kitchen update. It will be too much to handle for us. moving, contractors, business travel, etc. I hope that one day, sooner rather than later, I can give you a wonderful update on our kitchen remodel, incorporating some of the ideas that you contributed so generously. Until then, we will live "in the past", 1990s to be exact, and there's nothing wrong with that... I wish you all a healthy and merry holiday season! Cheers! :-)

Hi Andrea, How exciting, congratulations. A couple of comments I would make. There is a lot of seating/eating in the kitchen! Do you really need a bistro table, dining table and island? I think the dining table is a must but the snacky casual seating I think either/or! Also as a guest, I hate toilets with two doors! I always think I'm going to forget to lock or unlock them both! I like the concept of the large utility room and I can't quite read all the words on there but can the toilet perhaps stay in its current location (saving ££) and make the kitchen and utility room one space with a new backdoor elsewhere or by shortening the existing toilet wall? Hi. As you're wanting to do something with the trucking I assume you're after an industriał look hence my comments.. I'd paint the units a soft grey. I think you can just use zinsser first and then paint over the top. Consider changing handles if in budget. I'd do the walls white. Maybe some grey/white brick wallpaper on the back wall. Add some wood or metal industriał stools to the bar. Also consider a long scaffold shelf on the fridge ŵall. I personally would get rid of the serving hatch but depends on budget and personal taste. I'd accessorise in mustardy yellow and add 1 or 2 industriał pendants. You can sometimes just adapt ŵall units to hide boilers but I think you'd need to build your own given the boxing in beneath. You can also look at tile paint if you wanted to change those.

Hi Zara,

It looks like such a lovely, bright kitchen! You could coordinate a look with stylish window blinds. We have a great selection available on our website but what make them unique is that you can actually swap the fabrics simply by hooking off the old one and hooking on the new one. This means that you can update the look of your room and add a different colour as often as you like. Even if you want to go neutral for now you can swap to a brighter colour down the line without the cost of replacing a complete system.

I guess that it comes down to the budget.
If you can afford it I would try to get more units- go looking at the DIY stores for similar as I think you might need extra storage.
It is worth getting an expert to fit them.
