Porcelain tiles for patio - good or bad idea?

Hi, we are redoing our garden & thought of buff sawn sandstone initially. When we went to look at it, we saw porcelain which looked lovely. We were informed that it does not require sealing and is frost resistant as its a man made material.

Has anyone used porcelain and can give me advice? Thank you!!

If you are going to fully tile with a large tile then I would tile to the same kind of height as the picture rail but have a steel tile trim instead. If your intention is to have a traditional bathroom with the skirtings and picture rails then I would probably favour wood paneling rather than tiles although more traditional tiles (likely smaller) would also work.

I’ve got a sandstone patio and I’m not sure how iron oxide manifests itself? I’ve got a bit of moss on the resin grout but that’s about it. There is a really good website called pavingexpert.com which I found very helpful for unbiased information when I wanted to choose paving. It may be of help.

This is just my opinion about porcelain, some people don’t have the same opinion. The non slip factor is fabulous and you can walk barefoot on it in the rain and it’s steady underfloot. It is only the difficulty of cleaning R13 porcelain that is annoying. A lower grade like R11 is easier to clean. I’ve bought a jet washer so we shall see how that goes.

Hi there, I am a bit late here, but just to ratify what Sonia said: I would not get rid of the York stone slabs at all! It would be a really good investment to get them cleaned and relaid! They look perfect for your surroundings! I also loved the stone wall that you have in your garden as well! Loads of elements that already add character to it! As for all the features that you want to add to your patio, I do agree that it is a lot for a single space, so maybe the best option is to create another patio area somewhere else in your garden and subdivide these features that you want among the different patio areas. Use paths to connect them and you have a journey through your garden! I know it is out of the scope of what you want, but I would also be tempted to adding some planting beds around the garden.
