Thanks both for your replies. I was thinking that since there will be a hedge right across in bed B, that C would ideally be for plants to give some variety. More hedge = more cutting too! I will check out Instant Hedge co for the front hedge. I can't have a wall doubling as a planter due to it being a conservation area. I wanted to maximise planted area so don't want to make A smaller... the cycle box will be a secure metal one and has end access so I don't think I need to make it smaller. I might put some wooden cladding on it and a planted roof over time but my first priority is getting the layout agreed for the landscapers. I like the idea of having a central shrub but don't want anything too tall. Do you think it would look good to fill A with gravel and have a say a 50cm perimeter with 3 beds set into it? central one for a big pot with shrub and other two for low plants. Or... a 50cm gravel perimeter with a single bed set into it. Big pot in middle and planted stuff around it. Actually, that second option is probably is better than 3 separate beds..

Hi - I have a confession - I still haven’t planted mine (job for late spring!). However, I did plant up a large galvanised bucket, and it looks great. To do this I had to drill drainage holes (easier said than done - I nearly burnt out the drill!). I then gave the inside and the bottom a couple of coats of hammerite paint, paying attention to the holes. It’s now a few years down the line, and it seems to be holding out well and no sign of rusting.

I think it could look really pretty but it’s obviously very narrow as you’ve said. I would therefore take inspiration from plants of the Mediterranean which are used to dry, ‘poor’ conditions. I did the same when I planted up a pallet which obviously is very narrow. Also taking into consideration your desire for evergreens, I’d suggest rosemary and lavender (think of the scents whilst sat there!) and possibly thyme. And interspersed with them- grasses is different weights and hues. You could then add some allium bulbs and agapanthus in between for some summer colour, but when they aren’t flowering you’ll have lots of different textures from the other plants to keep interest. Also - rummaging in brain for stuff I learned in garden design course - the hard landscaping is providing great structure, but you will need to balance it with quite a large volume of plants. You should think about having equal ‘volumes’ of blank space (the terraces) and planting. So you need height and volume. I would def think about including some big shrubs to give you privacy, structure and planting volume. Then intersperse with dramatic perennials (the cardoons, crocosmia, acanthus etc) then have some gentler flowering perennials in clumps of three or five plants so they make an impact.
