If only 75% finished the inside of the new room is probably unfinished plaster. When the room is finished and decorated you will find it far more reflective.

Thanks for the reply, don't think I'm quit at that stage yet though. Was more looking for general ideas on where cooking/dining areas could be located and how to fit in the utility and loo. Hoping that others who have done similar projects could share ideas on how to get the best layout for the space.

Kitchen design looks great! I'm pretty sure we can offer some expertise on Lighting for your consideration. Firstly totally agree with you partner that a grid of recessed light looks a tad boring. If you do opt for recessed a more modern and practical way to use them would be to use them in a row against your high cabinets, just in front of them. This will not only show off your featured cabinets but also bring some much needed light to the ovens and in cupboards. I'd urge that you do have lights above the peninsular. If you can switch different circuits separately, if you can't use dimmer switches where possible. Stick to a common theme between you lights e.g.: same colour metal or similar style but they do not need to be all the same. In a larger open plan area different lighting help things look interesting and zone the area's. Above you table you'll need a light but if the light hangs in front of the TV that will not be so good, reflections will drive you crazy. You didn't mention ceiling height but we do have lights for the tallest and shortest ceilings. Hi Chandon, Looking at your plan, for the most part I can see you can provide natural light from the rooflights as you note. The area where light may be limited, as far as I can determin from your plan, is the floor area after the island containing the sink & hob etc. This I think is where you are in the existing dwelling ? If so, there doesn't appear to be any natural light from windows anywhere in this area as far as I can see, I guess there are restrictions on this side ? If the above is so, then some additional natural light may possible in the form of borrowed light from the hallway, as it looks from your plan you have an open plan study area with a window. As a consideration, perhaps an inset area of glass located in the dividing wall between the hallway & kitchen would provide some light ? Other than that & subject to what is above the kitchen area, (first floor rooms ?) one of those light tubes may be possible to duct in if it can be located without detriment to anything above.
