Pretty cottage with sagging floors

Hi, perhaps you can help me. My OH and I bought a lovely 18C cottage a couple of years ago which we're gradually making more to our taste - which is eclectic/colourful. The first floor bedroom floors and landing all sag very noticeably in the middle. They are currently covered in grubby beige carpet and we're keen to get the carpets up. Not sure what to do to make the floors look better. We think there is a mish mash of floorboards underneath but probably not that uniform. My thought is that we should just paint the boards and put rugs over them. I also love rubber flooring but I think that might be too out of keeping. Everywhere I've lived seems to have sagging floors and this can be quite noticeable. What do others do? Any ideas gratefully received.

Do you mean take the saggy ones off the joists and begin again? If that's possible we'd definitely consider it. But I suppose I assumed when there are saggy floors it's because the whole ceiling is somehow dipping. But it would be great if we could.

I think I would prefer to keep the French antique carved wedding bed in original condition as love the warmth of the wood and detailed carving. Would love to change the carpet eventually as money permits. I have a gorgeous antique chest of drawers also in the room but can't get the angle of the camera right. Should the carpet eventually be darker or lighter? I Will look around for some beautiful artwork and add some texture to the bedding. Your input is very helpful, thank you.

Just personal opinion but I think I'd put a shaker kitchen in a period cottage. If it's set in stone I'd soften it with wooden shelves, chopping boards etc. If you like the red based neutrals then I might look at adding some brown red (excuse the picture!) in the kitchen for either patterned tiles or a patterned wallpaper on one wall which would bring the cottage feel and character back (you can protect wallpaper with polyvine dead flat varnish). Not a colour expert at all but if you weren't set on the red tones then maybe an olive green or dirty ochre would work with the black and white?

Bonkers… aaaarrrggghhh! We don't know what to say, Tani. Not acceptable but this trade of ours is poor at this sort of thing. Mind you, you do get them FOC. Paint… there's another story. Have to pay £5+ for a weeny sample pot. Delays are flippin' annoying but much better to make sure you are certain about your choice. We don't have a display unit in our showroom (drat!) otherwise we'd suggest you come and have a look whilst sipping on one of our exceptionally decent coffees.

Actually - taking out the blue in the entry as per the above suggestions would so help the rooms tie together. It would lead well into the living and connect with the bath, leaving the kitchen as the only stand out. Depending on how much you feel the kitchen needs - replacing the benchtops with wood and removing the blue on the cupboards may just be what's needed to bring the rooms into one theme.

Hiya, My cottage is about the same age and I know exactly what you mean. First, I would check and see if it is structural. There is no point in doing all the work, then finding out that you are going to have to replace it in 5/10 years when it folds in on itself.

I stripped the floors in one room and it was a massive job. Old floorboards have big gaps and mine had lots of old nails and other bits that I had to remove by hand one by one. Eventually I dark stained them and bought a carpet that leaves a 1m gap around the edges of the room, to give it the period feel, but cover up the not so good boards in the middle.

After doing one bedroom, I have screwed Flooring boards (thick special chipboard) to the others. Made it level and reinforced, then bought a good underlay and carpet. To be honest, it looks and feels so much better, I wish I hadn`t bothered with trying to strip the floors in the other room.

Okay, so this sounds like a good option (apart from the carpet!) "made it level". We can't have carpet because we are too careless and we have 2 dogs. So I would like a more cleanable surface. But I will look into flooring boards and will definitely post pictures. I will take some sagging ones now!
