POLL: Would you ever let your partner design your home?

Love, relationships, design - what do they all have in common? Well, apart from the tears and the feel-good factor, they all rely on an element of trust. But how far are we able to let that trust extend to? As interiors geeks, design is something close to our hearts and we're all, well, particular about how we like our spaces shaped and structured.

With all that in mind answer me this - would you let your partner completely design your home, or is that a step too far?

Yes - I'd trust my other half with anything!

No - not a chance in...

Maybe - I'd have to have most of the input though!

He has pretty good taste on the whole. Design on computer or paper, yes, but I'd want veto power.

Bread, bread...! I can't think of anything more homely...! I still hand-keand my sourdough bread and when I bake it I feel there is nothing more delightful in life than my kitchen with my bread and the vision of my family eating it over next few days.

I used to allow my Burmese anywhere and the wake up 'boofs' - cat talk for running up the bed and patting me on my face to wake me to feed them - were lovely. Then I started showing and breeding & got more cats. I'd wake to find myself on the edge of the bed while they sprawled out over 7/8ths of it! Now they all sleep in the kitchen, but kittens are due next month and will be born in my bedroom. No doubt my 1st time 'mummy' will bring them onto the bed one at a time, and I just can't wait!!!!!!

I'm obsessed with interior design whilst my partner has no interest in it, though everything would be red if he had his way ( I am a pink lover). I have carte blanche to indulge in my design passion (he is in charge of all household gadgets). Hi Tom, it's a great question - think if there's more than one of you in the house you have to collaborate to some degree ....but there's no question, some people have clearer ideas than others about what they like!

My other half has excellent taste, but he leans terribly toward "spartan" (which is a nice way of saying "bare"). He doesn't even decorate his Christmas tree! I err too far the other way, with a weakness for floral fabrics and knick-knacks (and masses of tinsel at Christmas!). When it comes to it (separate abodes for now), decorating is definitely going to be a matter of negotiation and compromise!

Gladly, my other half is a expert in her field and trust her judgement on most decor choices. Perfect example is the total white interior of our home, I thought I would hate it but she was spot on with the other elements of colour and mid-century furniture that she added to it.

Don't get me wrong, there have been some things that I wouldn't have chosen but I don't get my knickers in a twist as I have my (man cave) studio office thats all me. Bare brick walls, modernist furniture and lots of books randomly stacked in various corners. Perfect

It kind of depends - if it's a 'communal' area, like the kitchen, we discuss. If it's the bedroom or wardrobe I usually want the say. Fair to point out that it's usually him who doesn't dare! I must be scary and fussy......

My OH has far better taste than me & quite daring! So yes, he has a major say in decorating.

Having just bought a blank canvas with my partner, we're both very much making all the decisions together. She has vetoed a lot of my ideas as I have hers. Which is a shame, because I quite like the modern technology driven home, she prefers a more rustic traditional feel. I fear for what our compromise will look like.

I like the idea of being able to compromise, or just let go—loving the good intention, if not the execution... but I can't really see it happening. (Which may well explain why I'm perennially single, of course.) What if he wanted everything in mahogany veneer? What if he installed upvc doors in place of my sash windows or decking where I wanted a lawn? Oh dear, I think I feel slightly dizzy now...

Built our own house + OH built it (a builder). As anywhere, we were restrained by planning regs, + as we were building within a cluster of homes, ours had to be in keeping with the existing. So as there were many restrictions- and knowing how the council planners operate - draughtsman drew up what we knew would pass + it did. So 75% of the design of the house was out of our hands before the foundations were built. As OH has built + renovated numerous houses he was ahead of the posse on what works + what doesn't. Underfloor heating? Fine idea, however there is no-one within 100 miles with experience should there be any problems .. Myriad of other bits and pieces which he decided without any input from me. My main input was - carpet on stairs, kitchen - cupboard to hide bin, butler's sink + no display units, half-glass front door with stained glass. That's about it really. Only 3 bug-bears that he decided on despite my protestations - the hideous gaudy plastic wood looking fire surround, no back-boiler in fire-place + 2 electric showers, instead of having 1 running from the tank. Had to wait 3 months for a washing line, and 6 yrs to get the front door painted - but the house is still standing + so are we!

Erm....well....he does have better taste than me....but usually we like the sameish sort of things... only his are always twice the price!!!!! He wants me to design everything though so.....hey ho!!! P.s. He's so cute that I wouldn't actually care if he did something awful!

I share my house with my partner, would always discuss ideas with him, but lead the project and ideas!

I've found that while I end up doing the leg work on projects and sourcing ideas, ultimately the credit is always claimed by the wife!

we've recently had a client who's wife designed everything & all against what we told her...result....refusal in planning - not listening to their architects & not listening to her husband!!
wouldnt like to live in that house!!!

He isn't interested in decorating, but he had definite ideas in what he likes and dislikes. Therefore, I do the decorating, but I take his tastes into account when I do.

I would never trust my partner to do anything as she would never be able to decide! However, i do let her have the credit..

I have to say, while we've been wandering around the shops and browsing online I've been pleasantly surprised at how much our tastes match - thank goodness! But then he always goes and spoils it with something awfully hideous and a world away from our original idea that I wonder if he's gone temporarily insane..

Good God no but thankfully he had absolute faith in my ability to cover the design side while I was happy for him to put his expert skills to work on the building front. Hard to beat team work.

My husband trusts me and prefers I make all those decisions. That said I always ask his opinion on large pieces. If I left it all to him he would lose interest before finishing! Design is so not his thing. But then I'm not interested in documentaries on outer space or Lego.... Best we stick to our own interests I think! ;)
