Will my sitting room look like a dentist's waiting room?

We have lived in our Victorian cottage for over 30 years. Previously in our sitting room we have had two small sofas coming out at right angles to the fireplace with a coffee table between them and another chair opposite the fireplace. This has worked perfectly but we are now of an age where we find a chair more comfortable to sit on (and get out of). How do I avoid the dentist waiting room look if I replace the sofas with chairs? Any advice or views would be welcome.

Keep one sofa, get a couple of chairs you like and then an additional slipper chair. Choose a theme to tie them together- probably similar colours. I would love to see the chairs in a pattern, a couple of matching cushions for the sofa and a plain small chair in a different colour chosen from the pattern.

Thanks so much for your suggestion. However, I have got rid of the sofas already and am still reluctant to buy another as we will never sit on it (and we are not very sociable lol).

A Crew of Two - Thanks for your thoughts. Excellent point about the sofas. I'll have a move around later and then re-photograph. Re the coffee table. I'm not keen on rattan. I think you are right I'd best source a rug locally. Perhaps it's a good idea for me to choose my ottoman/coffee table first as the one above might get entirely lost on a cream/beige rug. Perhaps a hazlenut sisal would work better in that respect. I like the texture of sisal.

Front room for me! we have three rooms opened into one large living space, this is great when you have a large family. I still say front room, but mainly to describe the location of say my book or glasses if I'm am asking somebody to fetch them for me. It makes for a quicker find :)

Marble would still work well in all those areas - luxurious and dramatic! A couple of points to take care with: - Take care if you're option for high gloss, as they can be slippery when wet - If you're opting for a very "white" marble (Carrara or some such), be prepared for it to show every dirty mark and need regular cleaning. If your lifestye can cope with this great - if you have three labrodors and live in a pair of Hunter wellies, I'd urge caution....

All of the above is fabulous, but probably very expensive. So, I came up with an amendment for a high sleeper. I took this High sleeper bed available from Wayfair I took the top layer off and moved it down. I was worried that if you put a desk at that level, then you need something around the sides high enough, so that if you move the chair backwards, you aren't going to fall off. If you put the desk at one end, then you can use the whole length for moving up and down. So this is what i had in mind. The blue bit marks where i placed thick ply wood across the slats for extra support. ( A big thank you to my 6 year old grandson Freddie who came up with the idea to start with, well done Fred )

Then get a different piece of furniture you will use... perhaps you have always wanted a baby grand or a place to play bridge. The key is to fill the room without a row of seating pressed against the wall like in a waiting room.

I would just google images of "living room with chairs no sofa". There are several ways to lay them out without creating a waiting room look. You can still mix pattern or colour as jonathan suggested previously.

Thank you both. Mmmm a piece of furniture that I would use - a desk springs to mind (or an antique dentist's chair). And I will certainly Google "living room with chairs no sofa" for ideas.
