I'm fortunate to share the same style and ideas as my wife, which means we limit the potential of constantly re-decorating to satisfy each others wishes. We will give the walls a freshen up but we won't deviate much from the style of a room as we prefer classic furniture and a period style decoration. We're blessed not to prefer modern styles otherwise we'd always be chasing the latest fashion. My sister wanted a black bathroom 5 years ago, which was passable at the time, but today it looks dated and the only way to fix it is to do a complete remodel - costing ££££'s again. No thanks, not for me. Our ethos is to buy the best and if we can't afford it then wait until we can - that way, it's bought once and kept for good as it's quality will transcend fashion. To me this means a victorian tiled entrance lobby, parquet flooring, muted Georgian wall colours, panelled rooms/half panelled hallway, painted shaker style kitchen cabinets with a classic wood/marble work surface, Belfast sink, (omitting latest fashions trends for round cabinets or modern countertops), real fire with carved stone fire surround (totally inefficient compared with multi-fueled stoves - but totally classic and romantic!) - I could go on but I think you catch my drift.

I'm keen redecorate our home but it was done quite recently so I can't really justify it. How soon is too soon...?

Every year we try to do 1 room/space on each floor - 3 floors,. 4 rooms + bathroom + hallway/landing = 6 spaces - so every 6 years, on 2 main floors. Basement has 3 rooms inc Laundry area, so external part of house falls into this portion.

However there are years when we've ended up with other major household expenses, new boiler, several appliances being replaced at the same time - that no decorating has been done. So it probably works out at about every 8-10 yrs. 1 boys bedroom has never been done in 14 yrs! Eldest son has moved away - but never cleared his room. #3 son has taken the room + has landed himself + all his gear into it making it impossible to do anything in there.

#1 is around this summer + has been warned to pack up what he wants to keep - otherwise his Ma will pack everything (into the bin). So hope to get this room finally done up in September.

Angelboyman nails it for me. We have been in this house 32 years and have done everything at least once from renewing the roof and windows to digging out the floor, putting in a damp course and installing central heating. The ensuing recoration has been a "classic" traditional colour-scheme of soft barley and sage green to suit the era the house was built. It suits us down to the ground and we are not distracted by outdated decor. We give it a lick of paint when it needs it. The house is the only one in this Victorian terrace to have retained many original features such as picture rails, dado, marble fireplace and ceiling rose, but internal doors were sadly a victim of the dreaded Fire Certificate and other "improvements", which also mean all the features inc. windows and front door were not retained as we would have wished and we have also had to cover the pine floors we so lovingly restored with carpets and vinyl because they needed protecting from high-heels and countless sandy feet. We also dopted the German fashion for wood-chipping and painting what were pretty uneven walls. They have been over-painted so often, the texture is barely visible and it has withstood the test of time. We are in a seaside location, so there has been heavy wear and tear from a couple of generations of holiday making friends and relatives as well as our own family. The kitchen is the biggest challenge being north-facing with practically no light and whilst it was being excavated we made the bathroom into a temporary kitchen, but never restored it, so now we have two showers and three toilets in the house, but no bath! The room is a designated "laundry room" which is also a tool store, boiler and hobby room. The house will soon be on the market, so redecoration will not be our choice. The new caretakers of this happy home will have a blank canvas. Good luck to them! I just hope they retain the features and the character.
