Hallway colours

Hi All

There seems to be a common theme on here with colour dilemmas! Too much choice out there I think.

Just moved into our new home and had hallway stairs and landing plastered. I was going to go down the grey route but then swayed to green olive or pale and then onto a heather grey off white pallet.

Floors are yet to be sanded and stained a darker richer colour as a run through from dining room.

So I need some advice - what should I go for and should I have all walls one colour or shall I use complementary colours on different walls?

I have to choose the paint by tomorrow and struggling - any help much appreciated.

Hello,

Whenever you are updating your house first you should think of your favourite style (Contemporary, Traditional, Minimalist, Scandinavian, Eclectic, etc.) and start from there to make your life easier. Is it only one or a mix of two?

I collected some pictures for you as an example. On some of them you can see the ceiling is painted in a different colour than walls, on the rest all walls are featuring one colour.

I very much like your wooden floor and I would personally pick white or off white. The handrail in black it looks a bit too much, maybe you could get it painted in white.

You have a good lighting in your hallway but this doesn't always mean you can go for a darker shade, magnolia, warm greys, etc., as it may not go with the surroundings or with the style of the house.

Maybe you could paint the walls upstairs in a different colour, that could look quite interesting or you may consider having the ceiling painted in a different colour.

Is the carpet staying on the stairs? It all look a bit dull at the moment.

looks very much like our hall/stairs. we are struggling too.

very high stair wall from living room and loads of old paint/paper.

Your carpet is a warm taupe so I think a greige (grey-beige) colour like F&B Skimming Stone, Or Dulux Egyptian Cotton or similar would look nice. If you feel they are too dark, then there are many off whites F&B do that are lovely. Earthy colours would be better than pure greys. Love the little round window! SKIMMING STONE

Thanks for both your comments. Those ideas are really nice Rachel. We have original parquet flooring in the hallway, so we will be keeping that and getting it sanded (which should make it lighter once the dark varnish is removed). The carpet will be going (I’m sure it was nice in its day!). We were originally planning on stripping back the stairs to have the wooden steps and a neutral/light carpet runner. However, there are so many layers of paint on the steps (some of which we believe is lead) so we won’t be able to strip back to the wood and are just going to repaint the stairs white and have the carpet runner like you mention. I have attached some more pictures of the hallway. The main dilemma, as you say @colourhappy, is choosing a combination of colours which feels welcoming – not too dark and not brilliant white! The areas we will need paint for are: Lower hallway panelling Walls above panelling in lower hallway Stairs and upper hallway wall Picture rail in upper hall Wall above picture rail in upper hall Woodwork (doors etc) There are lots of different areas so struggling to find the right combination!

To me, painting is the last decision to make. Do your spotlights and wooden/glazed staircase as you say you have planned and then when that is done you then paint according to how it looks then. At least thats what I'd do

We went for pale grey on all walls with a darker grey on the wall as you go up the stairs. I also went for a grey striped carpet. Bannister railings white and real and post very dark grey. Floor was sanded and polished a nice warm light brown. Still haven't decided on window dressings or pictures yet.
