Colour of wall units

Hi are the wall units colour putty? Looks gorgeous against the mushroom base.

Hello, thank you for your question. All of the units are actually painted in 'Mushroom', the base cabinets just look a little darker due to the lighting. I hope this helps! Zoe // deVOL Kitchens

Thank you. I have now seen how the colour changes with the light on one of the other photos! Love it.

I would say that almost any colour can go with wood but not all shades of any colour. It tends to work best with more complex / less intense colours. So sage green or grey/blue would go well, but lime green or bright blue wouldn't go so well. Sage or grey/blue are usually available in off-the-shelf Shaker style doors, which you have there. They also go well with other subdued colours, so you could have either of those mixed with cream or pale grey. I wouldn't mix blue and green as you seem to have in your picture above, though, but that might just be my tastes. Also, I was extremely underwhelmed by the quality of oak worktops. They use a fast growing species (there are several species of oak) which has very little character and often a rather nasty orange tint. I chose a birch worktop from B&Q instead, which is much cheaper and has an amazing 'tigers eye' effect once oiled - absolutely no regrets there, my worksurface looks way better than my brother's more expensive oak one. Lastly, I did a lot of research and chose Fiddes Hard Wax Oil to finish the worksurface. Do not skimp on the finish, I've known people who have and they've univerally regretted it. I am extremely pleased with the Fiddes, water can sit on there as long as it wants and never sinks in. I know 2 people who chose different worktop oil brands and they have to wipe water off within 5 minutes or it leaves a mark.

With regards the flooring, something with a more traditional look instead of the laminate. So flooring that either mimics floorboards, or actual floorboards. I can understand why people don't want to strip original floors, they are invariably beyond looking good when finished, therefore, it's possible to relay 'new' reclaimed boards over the top of the old in the opposite direction to the original ones with a membrane underneath to stop any drafts. This adds back the 'original feature' look which people purchasing old buildings often love. A darker, richer finish will look great. With regards the wall unit, something larger and more commanding to make use of the ceiling height would be a lot better. Also a unit which will allow for your Flat screen to be at a good height. You may well be better off with a custom built unit in this case.

Hi Amy, I agree with many of the points above, I can see the wall behind the sofa in a dark colour to zone the seating area. I would suggest maybe a funky roman blind at the kitchen window with matching cushions on the sofa. The unit next to the table looks a bit low for the room, could you go for something higher, maybe another sideboard to match the one under the tv unit this will also create more storage and create more balance in the room. I would go for a simple rustic wooden table with a mix of modern chairs to bring some more natural finishes into the room. As above a large rug which goes under the front legs of the sofa and up to the tv unit would help cosy up the seating area and zone the space. As for bifold window finishings, you do not really have room to have pull back curtains at the sides so I think it has to be simple roller blinds, you can get sheer ones that will prevent the daytime glare, are you actually overlooked or would they be adequate at night?

Thanks for the comments. The floor is white porcelain with marble effect. The cabinets are high gloss acrylic. I have aluminium gola profiles with LEDs. Walls white, appliances black. The tap is a brushed stainless steel gap. So it’s a white with a bit of silver and black. There is a roof light and a garden with grass so there is colour outside. Also, it will be semi open plan where the living/dining will have the same floor but with warmer coloured furniture/wood tones. I agree, I’m tempted to embrace the white as this was our general idea but as the job progressed, I was thinking maybe it’s too much and I can do something different with the worktop.
