IDEAS HALLWAY/LIVING ROOM

Hi, looking for some advise/ideas on how to overcome a very narrow and dark hallway (0.79cm wide) and convert the little that's left of the garage ( it's part converted into a study room with no window!) we were thinking on knocking the lounge wall and maybe have a porch built so we are not entering straight into the lounge. Its a 1930's semi detached house. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

Some years ago, I had a project with the same problem. A long, dark and narrow hallway.

The solution was create a design of large window on the walls and the doors with windows. It is very difficult to explain but this solution give more light to the hallway,

As much as possible consider your hallway also a living space, so don't make it the means to an end but part of the house.
I agree with you that opening up as much of the lounge and dining area would diminish the tunnel effect of the hallway. Maybe leave a small part of the wall at the entry way to provide discretion and a hallway area

Also the fact that your guests have to go via the kitchen to the powder room is not ideal.

Finally you need to find out where the main support walls are in the house, and either work on replacing them with support beams to open out the house ($$$) or identifying where support posts would remain ($$)

Not for clients, I generally work away from home for actually work work. On the immediate left wall as you come in will be a mirror and general "life" display of photos, up the stairs I'm going to start with old photos at the bottom and as you go up the stairs I get older / later life things, so it's like a journey :) I want to create an "experience" for when people come around

My gut instinct says ‘2’, because the end of the corridor in ‘1’ seems like dead space. Looks like you’ve still got plenty of room for a TV in option. I feel as if option 2 also gives plenty of useable space in the hall for coats/shoes etc which I personally like.

HU…..1st suggestion has some really good points. It allows circulation through all rooms, allows for closing off the dining zone with sliders, by improving the under stair storage you can get a cupboard, coat and shoe storage in to the lower areas and keep an entry so you are not entering straight into the living area. I think it might just get you the best bang for your buck with minimal disruption.

I like the idea of the porch using the last bit or garage. It looks like you have a great space to make it a lovely entrance with shoe/coat storage, a large mirror and a bench perhaps.

If you decide not to knock down the wall to the lounge and retain the entrance hall, you could consider putting in some high level internal windows to let some light into the hall from the other rooms. Also, if it's dark then run with it rather than fight it. Paint it a gorgeous dark colour (or wallpaper) and install a run of slim, beautiful glass pendant lights. It will be so gorgeous and dramatic when you enter, then if your other rooms are lighter they will appear so much brighter in contrast.

I would move the utility into the study.
Then I would divide the living room- use the front as a formal dining room and open it up to the hallway.
The knock the rear part of the reception into the back of the house to create a big living kitchen with windows at the back
