Small living room with stairs

We have a tiny little living room with zero storage in a house that is totally impractical but we love it so I am desperate to make it work. The lack of storage is a major issue. I'm just curious as to if I blocked under the stairs off to create a storage cupboard how would I place furniture. The sofas are going and we are wanting to get a corner sofa. The furniture will all be different. Sideboard coffee table rug TV unit all in walnut the flooring will be changed too and there will be NO children's toys they are all going in her bedroom. Im thinking of using greys and adding a big patterned rug. I'm just curious if and how it will all fit and stil be practical.

Congrats on making so much of a small space - this really is a beautiful room! I think the first layout or the very last layout (with the sofa against the stairs) works best and makes the most of the space without making it tricky to get back and forth like you said. Thanks for the information, it's quite a challenge if everything you've listed has to stay in the room. I know it's costly but replacing your lounge and rocker with a corner lounge would work well. Alternatively put the rocker in a bedroom and work with your existing lounge. Position the lift chair in the tv corner, the tv, games console on the wall as you walk to the stairs and a corner lounge on the wall opposite the fireplace or under the window. Can you place furniture in front of those heaters? There would be space to walk thru to the stairs. I'll keep thinking of other options as I love a puzzle!

You definitely don’t want to box this up! Any storage space is valuable and turning small space into study will add value. The other option is to make it into a cosy day bed/snug. You could add some wall lights which would really make it feel like a mini room off the main one.

I need to add book cases somewhere too if anyone has any bright ideas because I'm at a loss

With the two doors and staircase you are a bit limited in layout options. I think it would be best to have your corner sofa essentially where your sofas are now, move the TV to the wall where the dolls house is on a new TV unit, (as looks like the one you have is a corner unit) and create an under stairs cupboard.

The new sideboard would have to go where the play kitchen is.

Yea that was where I'd thought about putting the sideboard but wasn't sure how practical it would be to have the TV in front of the cupboard I'd thought of maybe having the sofa in front of the cupboard but didn't think it give a very clear path through the room. I know the house is totally wrong for us now but we all love it so much

I meant the TV would go flat against the wall where the dolls house is, so it's away from the cupboard doors.

I was thinking about storage under the stairs but I was struggling with positioning everything and also where I could put book cases

Hi Natalie. I think with spaces like this where you need to maximise storage and not block the walkway I would have custom made shelves under the stairs - some of these can be open for books and DVDs and others as cupboards. I would then fit the TV on a bracket on the wall where the dolls house currently is. A small sideboard could be added under here or where the 'play kitchen' is although this would limit the size of the L-shaped sofa. I think painting the woodwork white is a great idea and I would also suggest swapping the floor length curtains for a Roman blind to increase the sense of space.

Hi Natalie. I work closely with a joiner on projects like this. He can supply virtually anything and you have the option of painting it or having it veneered. If you make enquiries at your local builders' centre I'm sure they will be able to recommend someone :-)
