Wooden or laminate worktops?
Comments (15)Thank you so much, all of you, for your very helpful advice. It's official - I'm going for wood! As well as all your comments, after I got home tonight I (sunflower) oiled all my wooden table and it looked fantastic, so warm & rich in colour. It was the first thing the hubby noticed when he walked through the door so that tells you something! And I thought that if I can just remember to do this every 6 monthly with the worktops then it really will look fabulous. And that's very interesting about what's happened to your laminate edges Chalkandbell, oh and the tip about wiping the edges dry after use. This advice is exactly what I was after - the kitchen companies will always say it's minimal upkeep but I really needed to hear from those who actually work with it every day. Thank you all. Comments (5)Hi I recognise that plan! Good to see you on another advice forum. Duropal make I think around 6 of their colours of laminate worktop upto 1200mm in depth. Really it all depends on where you are getting your kitchen from and their suppliers. For example if we are getting laminate worktop from a UK supplier then we get it from a 'cut and edge' worktop supplier, not just a 'blank' board supplier. A cut and edge worktop supplier will supply laminate worktop to a plan we provide, they will pre cut the masons mitre joints and profile all the edges. This is so much better than the fitter cutting blanks and gluing on laminate edges. I know from previous discussions on the other forum you were looking at Schuller kitchens, I assume this is not your choice now as you would not have these problems you are talking about with the laminate worktop, because Schuller have a huge range of laminate worktops, with lots of edge options and in all sizes! Anyway, ask your kitchen man about getting a price for the laminate worktop from a cut and edge specialist. CK...See MoreReal wood v laminate worktop
Comments (4)There will be a difference in price between Quartz and laminate worktops so I guess it's down to budget. What I would say is don't buy your worktops from Howdens. They are cheap and don't have a balancer fitted underneath them causing them to possibly warp in time. Look at some of the better well known brands for laminate worktops such as Axiom, Prima, Egger (Bushboard and Formica products). If you look after them they'll look after you. They can last years....See MoreHelp! How to modernise kitchen with baltic brown granite?
Comments (29)You wanted a design tool—try Room Arranger (ios, android, windows). It’s free unless you want to keep your design (a workaround if you don’t want to pay is to screenshot the elements of the design you want to keep). If you take photos of the existing granite, you’ll be able to arrange your cupboards as they are and colour them as you please. Personally, I think the top cupboards should either be removed/reduced if you can find more storage elsewhere. If kept, paint them pale so that they fade into the background. I would forget painting the lowers until your puppy is at least a year old, depending on the breed—if you’re doing the work yourself it takes several weeks to do (speaking from painful experience) and the paint will then need another lot of weeks to reach full hardness. It would drive you nuts if you put all that time into it, only for the puppy to scratch or mark your hard work, which is quite likely (I’ve had three puppies, by the way). If you really can’t live with the doors, and they’re standard sized, maybe just change them for something inexpensive from ikea/B&Q etc that you can live with for a few years? Then if they’re badly damaged they’re easily replaced out as needed (assuming you’re not unlucky and pup doesn’t go mad with multiple doors). Alternatively, you might be able to get them spray painted, which I believe gives a very tough coating....See MoreVictoria
