What handles for these doors??

I've almost finished painting my 60's orange hollow core bi-fold doors, white (another coat to go!), and I now have to decide on handles. I can't have anything that sticks out too much on this side as they fold into this room. (Image with the sofa)
The other side is more modern and they can stick out more.
I'm at a loss to know what I should put there that doesn't look dated or in your face ie long handle? Round knob? Square knob? It previously had square flat wooden knobs on.
Any ideas please? Thank you

Comments (2)That is down to personal taste really. How much finger prints show up will depend a lot more on the quality of paint than the actually sheen, although to be fair with a french grey you shouldn't have too much trouble anyway. Even more so with a handleless kitchen, given that the point of touch is often hidden from view. Comments (8)Hello Jennifer, Sounds like a lovely idea! For wood stain, it may be that you can just sand the doors to remove the stain. If it was painted I would have suggested a heat gun, scraper tool and sanding or Nitromors scraper tool and then wire wool, water and sanding.... Hopefully the wood stain might be a lot easier to manage! Especially if you have animals or nippers around... For the locks... It could be straightforward If you can align the rim lock and door jam so it's in line with the holes in the door.. I'm no chippy here! So maybe you might want to hire one to do it for you, it's a small job really but one you want done right.. I have a collection of old doors someone didn't want with loads of holes all over the place from previous owners....(I made them into a screen).. but I could see all the botch jobs that had taken place over many years...... : )) The box lock as they are known is a surface mount whereas other styles aren't so you may have to do a bit of filling depending on what is already in situ.. Comments (9)So you know I bought a single 'click deco' brand dolly light switch a while back and found it to be pretty poor quality so it was returned. Ended up with these: http://www.forbesandlomax.com/the-unlacquered-brass-range.html Really good quality and they have lovely finishes too. I quite like their antique bronze range too as it contrasts nicely with chrome/nickel finishes without clashing. If you'd really like everything to match then take a look at the Jim Lawrence range. They're not the cheapest but offer both light switches and door furniture in a large selection of finishes. 8 years agoPhew. Can you believe I still can't find any damn handles to go on these doors.
Turns out my problem is not what they look like but more that I need ones that don't put a hole in the other side!
The original handles were short profile and screwed in from the front and then you screwed in the knob part into the central section of the fixed piece
(See the image attached for one of the original pieces left - it has a hole in the middle you can't see now)
As the handles are fixed from different parts of the door on the opposite side, all the standard door knobs won't work as I end up with a screw end and knut showing on the other side.
Looked at the slimline handles that sit on the edge but it doesn't work for all sections as the doors fit tight now they are painted.
Aside from making my own backplate fixings (which will look naff as would be painted wood!) - does anyone know where sells the knob plate I'm needing??
I must have emailed ten companies and spent days looking, to no avail.

6 years agoCabinet handles tend to have a smaller diameter so bolt through from the other side and are mainly suitable for cabinets and drawers where this doesn't matter.

Or another solution would be to fit a round knob such as from the link below and cut the head off the bolt to screw the knob on from the other side?
