Living Room dilemma

We are currently renovating our newly bought house but I find myself completely lost in how to position furnitures in the living room. The thing is the fire place is directly in the middle of the (living/dining) room as you enter.
The dining room will be on the left side. So where do I begin to put the settees?
Another thing I can't get my head around is...how do I put the telly on the same wall as the fire without the telly (50") grabbing the focal point from the fire?
The photo attached is when we acquired it. The fireplace is gone and we're putting a modern one. The 2 circle windows are also boarded up.
Advice needed badly. Please...

How about sofa and chair facing each other with fireplace and a coffee table central to that. You can then put tv on low unit near opposite wall to fireplace, so less "in your face". Plenty of room then for your dining area behind sofa, and access to patio doors behind chair?

I agree with garden may about the positioning and also placing the tv on the opposite wall - the only issue being the wall heater. When you updated the heater did you remove the brickwork or is that still there?

In a long narrow room you need to position furniture across the room to break up the space. If you are in the market to purchase new furniture I would consider buying a more contemporary slimline sofa and armchairs.

Hi everyone , thanks for all your comments, everything you have said is exactly what we have been thinking.... flush simple ceiling lights and a floor lamp in the corner, although we are now toying with the idea of two matching lamps on tables at either side of the bay window and maybe adding some wall ornaments or something to add detail above the lamp to balance the curtain height . Yes we were going to add some wall art between the sofa and cabinet. Yes the sofa can be moved closer to the other sofa but that works better if the tv is positioned more in the corner and because of the huge tv it had to be flat on the wall ( I would love the TV to be wall mounted but my husband is old fashioned and the tv HAD to be on a cabinet) there is more space than it looks between back of sofa and cabinet so it's not too univiting and the ottoman seems to line up where it is.

This is what it looks like now, we’ve not touched this room since we moved in ;( we had some brill ideas on the initial post, unfortunately I’m still stuck on the layout, Ive got to keep the same sofa and flooring (and patio doors) for costs but everything else can go but can’t seem to do anything with the layout, I hate this room :((

Hi Sharon, I like the idea of herringbone. But I don't believe the arch/flooring decision need to be related. It's a modern looking arch not the 'traditoonal 90s' one so looks fine. I agree with Ellie to treat the rooms as two and have armchairs to enjoy the garden view. Re curtains...is the blue on the dresser wall the same blue as the one on fireplace wall please? Can't quite tell from pics...

Thanks gardenmay and susanp for the advice.
We removed all the brickwork entirely and be putting up a chimney breast.
I'll surely try your suggestions. I like the idea of breaking the room with armchairs (which I still don't have).
Will post more photos when the fire has been put into place.

Hi. Apologies if I'm stating the obvious but try cutting out templates in sofa and chair sizes. You can then try arranging the templates in numerous ways to see what works best. It could be for instance that 2 sofas of the same size work best. I would also just be a bit careful about the tv in front of the radiator, furniture doesn't always look great in front of them. The room also looks pretty long? It could be that you have a couple of chairs arranged around the fire with maybe a small table or foot stool and then a tv area with sofa down the patio door end. As Susan said, furniture positioned across the room in narrow rooms tends to look a lot better otherwise you can end up with a corridor effect
