How can I paint white over dark wallpaper?

Hello!
I am wanting to paint over a wall which has a dark burgundy wallpaper on it. It's over a fireplace and I am trying to get it covered with a neutral cream or white paint and without removing the wallpaper....
Any tips greatly received, thanks in advance.

As long as the wallpaper isn't excessively shiny you should in theory be able to paint into it.

Check the paper is fully stuck down so check corners, joints etc

Paint it with some Matt emulsion, sand the joints down slightly then paint it again until the colour is solid

Use 1 2 3 Zinsser primer-sealer first for it blue tin, water based and two top coats.

A belated THANK YOU to everyone who commented. This is the final result. We're super happy with it. Room A north facing "through-lounge" in a new build, 3 bed semi detached house Paint Walls: Purbeck Stone, Farrow & Ball Ceiling: Strong White, Farrow & Ball By the way, the room isn't as long and skinny as it looks in the photos. Painting it all one colour actually made it feel much, much larger. We were really impressed with the quality of advice the F&B staff gave us in regards to colour. We loved Purbeck Stone from the minute we saw it, and being brave really paid off.

If you can borrow a steamer it would make the removal a bit easier, especially if you score the surface. Definitely get the crack looked at too. I can't tell the colour of the carpet, is it terracotta? Whatever it it, search through Houzz photos to look for colour schemes that include that colour to get ideas for the complimentary neutral wall colour D& K Interiors above suggests, And don't forget to post pics when you have done so we can see the transformation! By the way, if you have a pensioner relative, they can get 10% off at B&Q on a Wednesday!

I think it may be overpowering , you can paint the walls a sand beige colour, or a colour picked out in the tones of the wallpaper, then have that walpaper as a feature wall behind the bed.

If I’m honest I think the tiles are the think that date your kitchen the most ... I’m not sure what they would look like painted (I’ve never done it)? To try and tie then in with a more modern scheme you like, as I agree any cupboard colour would need to match them otherwise. Definitely possible to paint the cupboards with the right sealant - but it will be time consuming as said above. If they’re not great quality maybe just paint the walls and save up for a new kitchen in a few years...?

Zinnser isn't needed plus the price is quite excessive when Matt emulsion does exactly the same
