New kitchen

I'm having a new kitchen, modern country styling. Kitchen island has neff island extractor above in stainless steel. I need two pendant lights for above oak dining table. The kitchen is painted oak in stone grey and island is plain painted oak. Any ideas please?

I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Along with wooden fruit bowl etc. The main window will have wooden venetian blinds, and the bay windows will probably be done in a darker grey material as the perfect fit style blinds you find in conservatories

If you have a magnet, hold it to the Le Creuset pots. If it sticks to the pot, you can use it on an induction hob. I’ve recently switched from gas to induction. Induction is much quicker and you can let the burner switch off automatically after a set time. And it’s easy to clean. So far the advantages I’ve found. Disadvantages: can’t see the flame, so have to work out what the settings do. I’m taking a long time to get used to that, but then again, I’ve only ever cooked on gas before. Sometimes the pans make an annoying high pitched tone. I had to buy new pans, but my big iron stew pot (not Le Creuset) should work on it. Haven’t used it yet, but it is magnetic. For my other pans I went to IKEA and got a great set with heavy glass lids from there. Very happy with them. Had to say goodbye to one of my big iron frying pans, because the bottom was slightly warped and then it doesn’t work well either. All in all I’m happy with the induction hob. I love the speed. But I think I still prefer gas. Anyway... we have a downdraft in an island, so gas wasn’t an option. But you could do both perhaps? Two gas burners, two induction ones for example?

I had a ushaped kitchen with peninsula in previous house as no room for island. I never felt stuck behind it- in fact i liked the fact that guests and kids were more likely to stay on the dining side out of my way! I now have an island as I'm stuck with the kitchen in the house we bought, and it drives me a bit crazy when there are lots of people in the kitchen as they all gather around the island and get in the way! I think your plan is pretty good except for oven position. I think it's really far from your workspace, and also I'd question the wisdom of having the oven beside the fridge? Maybe a tall larder cupboard in this position, and a range style cooker with double oven beneath? Or move the hob to the peninsula and put double oven somewhere along that wall?

Are you likely to extend in the next few years and therefore want a cheap solution “for now”? Or are you unlikely to extend in the foreseeable future so want a permanent better solution (more expensive than a temporary fix but not as much as a new extension)? For a cheapish “for now” solution I would suggest putting a fridge where there currently is a storage console table in the pictures - ie next to the (?) coat rack. You probably have space to put some extra kitchen storage around it too. That way it‘s a bit more accessible than in the utility, and you can have a dryer and more space in the utility. Is that your dining table, or the previous owners? It’s pretty giant and swapping to a smaller table would give you more space to put in a dresser or sideboard or other storage somewhere near it. Or even a built in wall of storage across the wall with the sitting room (if you don’t mind blocking the internal window). For a more permanent solution, I would agree with the suggestion of moving the whole kitchen to the other side of the room. You could have an L shape kitchen along the sitting room wall and side wall, with an island. Much more kitchen than currently. Then I’d probably put the dining table in the middle of the room and make the ex-kitchen area into a snug with small sofa. I‘m not suggesting any changes to the utility purely because from the plan it looks as though it’s got some serious supporting walls around it (perhaps the original end wall of the house) so it will be very expensive to change it. If I’m wrong about that, however, it could make sense to knock through into the utility to buy yourself more kitchen space, and then carve a new utility off the back end of the very large study.
