The garden shed! Very British.

Oh and new build housing estates with matching matchbox red brick overlooked houses, with cedar red fences around postage stamp gardens attached by paper thin walls to the neighbour who has 2 dogs and a music fuelled teenager who doesn't even realise they have the cedar fenced garden let alone goes out in it. Very very british

What concerns me about buying furniture on-line is that I can't try it out to see if it is comfortable and if it fits me , which for me is a crucial quality in furniture (I'm taller, shorter chairs aren't a good fit). I also don't like not being able to assess the quality. I'm not a big fan of on-line furniture retailers for that reason and probably would not use one. So research the market, and especially the price point at which people will buy on-line. I suspect younger people are more apt to buy furniture that is reasonably priced on-line. Include all measurements (including seat height on chairs) and have a review/comment section so people can see how the folks who have bought furniture like both quality and the delivery service.

Having lived abroad for eight years and suffered sun temperatures around 50c I realized that we were stuck indoors more often in the summer than in the winter. Back in England, I can be out every day and at all times of day. I'd rather wear a cardi or jacket, even carry a brolly and be out and about. English coffee shops and cakes. I could go on. I love being back in England

Discussing new car, holidays, redecorating and then just doing what he wants. Why waste time asking my opinion when the decision is already made? Also gets take-away coffee every morning to drink at home. When finished, he picks up cup + leaves it beside the sink? He walks past the recycle bin ( where it belongs) + places on counter above rubbish bin. Dunno. It baffles me. Think I should have been a Time + Motion Officer or Productivity Manager or whatever they're called today. BUT he brings me a cup of Kenyan tea in a china cup every morning in bed.

The 'airing cupboard' is an interesting British thing that I still can't get my head around. Thankfully don't have one in my house with new combi-boiler, but sister-in-law won't part with hers. Hmmm. Maybe I'm missing something?

the fact it doesn't take itself so seriously...! It has a sense of humour about it somehow, a dry playfulness. That, to me, is very British.

Airing cupboards are great! For the first time, my house doesn't have one and I really miss it. Where else do you put your nearly-dry clothes when you have to take them inside because it's about to rain, but they are still a little too damp to go into your drawers? And if it's near the bathroom it's a great place to keep towels so they are slightly warm when you need them. And the number one use I find is for keeping dough warm while it rises. The airing cupboard is the perfect temperature for that or any other culinary things that need a warm temperature in winter (yogurt making, yeast-based doughs, homemade cheeses, ginger beer...)

Separate hot and cold taps in the bathroom instead of a mixer tap. My flat is only 12 years old and it still has them.

Hello Emmeline.. The most British thing or English would be the sound of my voice.. The beginnings of a stuffed animal collection.. proper silver cutlery, linen napkins, china cups.. Wellingtons on the door step... and a fine collection of brogues for girls! (I do love them.. Oh character and a corker of a sense of humour! . : ) )

My garden! Fully enclosed with trees, plants and porching! Backing onto the countryside! We sit out till all hours with solar powered garden lights and enjoy it in all weathers thanks to our open porch! (rain??? What rain?) :)

The British influence is everywhere in our house. There is Union Jack inspired decorations everywhere. Many of the paintings I create are of the English countryside so we are always reminded of home. I just opened the Cupboard to make tea and smiled at our cup selection so I have including a photo of that but I think our red Welch dresser is our biggest British statement!

the style of the house: lots of rooms with doors between, big kitchen and small tiny sitting area! I'm Italian living in Ireland, I guess the Irish housed are similar to British in term of layout/stile (please don't take as an insult for British or Irish)

The most british things in my house are the antique brass beds - the one my son has is by Heal & Son and the quality is outstanding (although the bed knobs are completely dinged!) a true sign of British quality back in the day (the other brass beds are good quality but nothing like this) and the union jack duvet on my son's bed! Other than that we have a tea pot (but are coffee drinkers!)

Tiny kitchens. So many house from Victorian times to today have the tiniest kitchens ever. That's why everyone knocks through (like we did) or extends! Also everyone now has swing seats in the garden that just get saturated by rain - aaaah British summers.............

Shower over the bath instead of a wet room. Radiators sited directly under the window to allow the heat to conveniently flow up and out of the house. :). Generally poor insulation. (but am comparing it to Scandinavia, mainly.)

Interesting! People say my house looks French, what ever that means... However, we have a gas fire in the front lounge with coal (and real flames!). This is typical British I think and never seen any on the other side of the channel.

Taking blue and white china off a dresser, like Spode or Willow Pattern, putting it with a white ceramic teapot with blue trim, and a matching quilted teacosy over it because it cools down too fast on a cold wet morning when you want to drink it HOT!

A very British bath with no shower. I think it was the late great Joan Rivers who couldn't get that we Brits have baths - she questioned 'Why would anyone want to lie in their own dirt' !!!

To add to my earlier comment, I think my individualism epitomises the very essence of being a true Brit. I'm not a slave to trends, just go with my heart and hope my design ideas will come together in some sort of coherent way. There's pride in that in spades, and we're a proud nation, aren't we?!
