How can I make our bland 1970's exterior more appealing?!
Comments (12)It all comes down to budget as always. The bigger the budge the more you can do. I would be really mindful of the fact, that if you change the facade, it would be better if you could change the windows. The wood cladding I agree would look fabulous, you could have the bottom a lovely grey to tone in. However, neither will look good with bog standard white windows, as both look better with a dark grey, thinner Aluminium Frame or a Chunkier Sandy Beige Frame. When you add white windows, the effect is not quite so slick The pic above shows the white windows with the cladding and it would look a lot better with the darker, thinner frames. If you can't afford to change or colour bond the windows, then maybe go for all over colour, a dark grey would be good, and consider changing the Front door for impact. Alternatively, work towards doing the ultimate change. The vertical wood cladding, with a grey underneath and a door to match the wood. Thinner dark pewter aluminium framed windows etc. sorry about the mock up quality!...See MoreHow to brighten up a brick and tiled house?
Comments (11)Hi Zoe, What a beautiful house- such a striking and interesting shape! Have you just moved in? I agree with Jonathan and Daisy above about maybe painting the windows, I think it would really soften the dark colours and provide some nice contrast. We have been through a similar process in the last 6 months and I got myself quite 'tied up' in trying to make the right decision as I knew it would be a big investment and desperately didn't want to get it wrong. It's great news that your windows are timber and you can paint them- we had horrible white PVC so have to change them all to get the look we want outside, which is a lot more costly! I think plants would add a lovely bit of interest as a part of the 'finishing touches' but do agree that window colours and perhaps some part render would have a much bigger impact on the overall look. I have to say that we 'cheated' as I am terrible at visualising things and just couldn't work out how it would look in my head and went with the renders option suggested above. We got a RAL colour chart (the one with only one colour per sheet- about £40 from Amazon) and for two weeks sent any of our friends or family who arrived at the house outside with it and without pointing them in one direction or another, asked them to pick their favourite colour against the brick work. We then took the 3 shortlisted colours and found a fab Interior designer to do high quality 3D renders. Once we had the 3D renders it was really easy to decide and we didn't feel there was any risk of making an expensive mistake as we already knew how it would look. We also used the 3D images to decide what to change a very small and ugly window that dominated the front of our house to- thanks to the images and the advice of the designer we ended up with a vast improvement and a pretty faux Juliet balcony to rebalance the proportions on the front of the house. You could try something similar looking at which bits (if any) you'd like to render. It's also worth mentioning that this service from a good designer will only be a few hundred pounds (nowhere near as much as I thought it would be when someone kindly suggested it to me) so for me, was well worth it considering the cost of what we were going to be spending on the materials and labour for getting things changed. Hope it helps :)...See MoreHow could I improve the front of this house?
Comments (9)I like Kerry Bryan’s first photo. I’m thinking maybe a hip to gable dormer window conversion above the garage with two dormer windows. Replace red tiles with black. Then stone cladding and white render with grey windows, not sure which stone yet or where. Not sure yet how to tackle the right side of the house and feel the window positions don’t look right...See MoreKerb appeal advice. What do I do with the front of my house?
Comments (25)Sorry I was slow on the uptake. It makes sense now that it is the external door that will need to open outwards if the double doors are replaced with a single. Hence the double doors! I think I go along with the view to remove the external double doors and have an open porch. To avoid confusion the side door would somehow need to look less prominent. I fitted solid oak windows and doors in my last house because I didn’t want to use tropical woods. That was way back in 1994 when environmentalists such as I were considered cranks. The builders certainly thought so. They were more expensive but not by a huge amount. Certainly not considering their longevity. I left in 2017 and they were still in pristine condition and will no doubt still be in another twenty years so certainly worth the investment. I used Sikkins to protect them which was easily applied with a paint brush. In all that time I only had to reapply one coat to the external surfaces twice and once to the internal window sills. No sanding required just a wash down before applying. Not labour intensive by any means....See MoreHouse Plans Helper
