What do you think about painting the wooden fire surround white? Was planning on paining wood work white.
Carpet?
Furniture will be changed to wooden?
Open to any good ideas

White could be a bit stark on a north west facing room in the mornings and winter months. What about using an off white or cream shade and adding a warm hue with the carpet?

Yes light and reflective surfaces, mirrors etc will improve the light levels. So The black rug is not a good idea, move it to another room! The idea of half shutters sounds good, though obviously these should be light coloured / white, don't go for darker timber slats.

Which colours do you like? It's a good idea to collect a pile of interiors magazines and colour copy the colour schemes you like, get some match pots, but remember to always choose a lighter shade of the colour you like.

This is because over a larger area paint colours appear stronger, so a couple of shades lighter will usually give you the effect you want. You could mix wall colours for example have two larger walls white or off white and the others a colour, perhaps lighter blue green, soft light green, soft amethyst purple/grey. When I start a colour scheme I sometimes start with a coloured patterened fabric I'm using for curtains or cushions and pick up the lighter tones on the walls and sofa upholstery for example.

White Tie would be a great solution - it is a fresh & a warm off white with yellow tones which will really help in a North facing room. I would avoid Joa's white as it has quite a pink tone. Why not also put a very large mirror on the back wall - this will help bounce more light around. If you want to add some interest, paint the door & wall around it in a deeper colour.

Hi Debbie. I hope it's all going well so far for you! You have some great ideas. When north light is involved I would stay clear of whites with green or blue undertones or infant, those colours. You want to enhance the warm. Try a white with a red or yellow undertone. This will easily pair with yellow so great on the rug. I would choose this white first and then when a test patch is up (or you have one on paper) I would look at a suitable green to work with it. For adding fun and to break up the block colour I would add a mural/sticker to the wall (someone like ink vinyl) they are reasonable priced and very easy not only to put on, but more importantly, to remove in a few years without leaving a mark as tastes change! :) You have a great start to the space and I look forward to seeing your ideas come together. Hi! We have a north facing kitchen/dining/living area with a patio facing west and a window on the east side. We went for a lighter colour (slipper satin) on the kitchen units as they are at the 'back' of the room (ie you enter the kitchen from the hallway, then the living/dining area is at the patio/garden end). It is a lovely soft off white and doesn't look cream because of the cooler light north facing rooms get. We opted for Drop Cloth (also F&B) on walls which a lot of people comment on as it looks nice and warm and not too dark nor too pale. Our accent colour on the island/kitchen peninsula is Railings as I have other dark blue accents in my furnishings. If you are going for Downpipe on the island, I would possibly go for Strong White on your units as Ammonite can look quite cold. I have used S White on both walls and woodwork in other areas of my home and love it. Farrow & Ball told me it suits north light well, as does Wimborne White - which is a lovely warm white. Have you tried a sample of it at all? As for the tiles, I much prefer the blanc ones, think they look more modern. I have attached pics of my kitchen and hallway (which has strong white). North-west facing rear garden - should we buy the property?

Our garden is North West facing, the house terraced and the garden average in size approx 70ft in length and 24ft wide to give you a reference. This makes our front room incredibly bright and sunny all morning which is fantastic. It does however mean that if you want to have an early breakfast in the garden, you have to go further down your garden away from the house. By late morning to midday the sun comes round and the garden is full of sunlight right up until it goes down (trees, obstacles allowing). However, our front door is directly next to our right hand neighbours when facing into the house. Downstairs at the back of their house is almost always completely in shade with the dining room and kitchen never getting any sunlight at all. Our gardens have what would have been coal sheds joined by the party wall extending out from the house. This totally blocks the sunlight into the back of their house and the patio just ouside. From that point on they have sunlight all day. Look at any walls trees, garages or out houses that might cause this issue on the left hand side of the house as you face your front door or out into the back garden. Hope this makes sense and helps in some way?

Thanks for that advise. Like the idea of an off white rather than white. Suppose l need to think of a colour scheme. I like warm tones- grey, blue, purple. Love velvety etc
