I would definitely keep the rug, it adds a little pop of colour and lifts the neutral colour scheme, but I wouldn't go too bold and I wouldn't conceal the windows because it makes the room so lovely and light If it were me, I would add splashes of colour here and there accessorising with similar turquoise'y blue/orange'y red colours to pick out those in the rug and dot around some large glass containers with fruit in (edible art!!). A large mirror on the wall would look lovely with some sconces either side, on which you could sit some beautiful vibrantly coloured orchids/candles/vases etc. Then perhaps some shelves above the cupboard by the door with some brightly coloured glassware/jugs. You said you have some young children, what about framing some of their little pictures and putting them up under the shelves? I did something similar in my kitchen and it livens it up a bit (see below) I would also think about perhaps replacing the shade on the standard lamp with something to pick up with the rug, or perhaps match it to the ceiling one Have fun!

I think the pale grey tile is too cold. For some reason I just don't like it and think it tips the room into something not as funky looking. I'd go for a small muted (very pale greys) tile laid in a herringbone/chevron pattern, or plain white metro tiles with grey grout. I'm not a fan of grey grout and white metro tiles generally, but I think they would look absolutely great in this room!

My kitchen refit starts 3 weeks today but won't be finished until next year when I have decided on the splash backs. This has been a project 2 years in the making due to several builders agreeing to do the work only to never hear from them again & also some very poor service from kitchen shops. Finally I have a builder on board who will move a doorway to accommodate the new position for my fridge freezer and fit a Second Nature kitchen in elm that is to replace an old cream shaker one. Most of the appliances are staying as they are newish but for the first time I will have a dishwasher, a wall mounted oven so I can see what is cooking & a Franke under mounted corner sink which was a brand new ebay bargain. I am switching from gas to a white induction hob that will hopefully fit seamlessly into white quartz countertops. I am so excited, all this in a 2.6m x 2.8m kitchen. I have also asked the countertop peeps to smooth off an additional piece of quartz to fit the sink aperture so I can use that as additional work space. I am boring my boyfriend with endlessly searching for the best deals on things and trying my luck haggling which is not usually like me but lots of fun! (Combi) steam oven. Vegetables and potatoes taste much better, more vitamins are left in your food, cooking rice and eggs is very easy and you can just walk away while the magic happens. I have a combi one, so can also bake in it with added steam, which is useful for bread. It has loads of programs for different products and beeps at you when you need to add for example potatoes, beans, fish, carrots, so that everything is finished at the same time. I could do without it, but it is a lovely thing to have.
