kitchen cabinets too dark, how can i create a lighter illusion

the colour of the spraypaint turned out about 2 shades darker. i cannot respray and am looking for other ways in lightening the overall shade?

Look into a wax that is white, they make it..just like a dark wax only in white

Also maybe update your lighting or bulbs in the room, undercounted lights as well

Hi Daniel What a lovely light kitchen! I see you have decided to change the worktop which is a good idea if you don't like the existing (temporary fixes always seem to stay forever in my house, much better to go for a permanent solution if it's within budget!) if you like colours I think the suggested mustard yellow would be good, or teal works really well with white and wood. Also, you mentioned tiled wallpaper, how about some real tiles? I have a new kitchen too, it has very pale grey gloss units and a white quartz worktop and white walls (at the moment, eventually I'm planning to paint them dark grey). It's lovely but a little plain like yours. I found some lovely tiles which are white and grey which sounds very dull. It they introduce pattern which really ties it all together. I think you could choose some tiles with a nice pattern (they don't have to be brightly coloured if that's not your thing). You'd only need 2 rows, not all the way up to the upper units, introducing some pattern could really bring it to life. And perhaps some coloured chairs when you get round to thinking about furniture? Also, how about hanging a picture on the wall below the wall unit above the washing machine? I love a picture in a kitchen! Hope this helps, enjoy decorating your new home!

Hi Angela, we have a dark rosewood kitchen. I looks very rich and solid. We kept plenty of light flowing around the kitchen by having light worktops and floor. white reflects much more light than any other colour ( even pale cream ) so we went for a white ceiling and white wall cladding . Lighting is very important in the kitchen and your dark walnut cupboards will emphasise your light coloured worktop. you may consider fixing lighting to the underside of your cupboards to really make your work surface the focus of attention and more subtle lighting on the walnut to emphasise its sophistication. ( also green, any herbs you might want to introduce into the kitchen, rich dark brown and white are a great colour trio).

So the sink and oven position are fixed- no problem. For me the things that stop this feeling industrial are the suburban elements such as the conventional sink with drainer, the drawer line cabinets, the open display unit, the hanging baskets of flowers and the chimney extractor. In my opinion a little exposed brick isn’t enough to pull this into an industrial look when there is so much conventional stuff. Personally I think you should be looking to add a chunky sink and taps. Build a chunky chimney to hide an extractor, choose cabinets that are random sizes and avoid having lots of matching cabinets. Consider non matching cabinets for the wall- personally I would go tall. And as far as decoration I think instead of flowers you should be thinking Iron furniture or clocks, antique mirror, tarnished brass, weather wood, reclaimed slate, anything vintage, etc, etc. Your visual doesn’t show lighting /. Consider the best way to do this and think Anglepoise lamps, wall hanging lanterns and oversized ceiling fixtures. I also think that if you want to go industrial you should cover up the floor and a click together floor or a vinyl are cost effective ways of doing this

Hi tani, the scaffolding one would be ok but will not give the sleeker square box section look your after, if it’s not too far, id take robin up on the offer to go on the welding course, you’d easily be able to put that together and cheaply as you’ll have access to their equipment, welding isn’t hard, getting it neat is the harder thing :-) I used to weld a long time back, never leaves you and very handy! As said, that’s not an expensive frame, esp if you can do it yourself, degreased raw metal and a coat if lacquer would be exactly what your after.

Hello Laura, Well if you can't find a solution.. dark cabinets are really fashionable at the moment.. Have a look at these for inspiration.. The other thing of course is that maybe you could paint the walls a lighter colour to compliment.. One thing I would say is don't spray paint cabinets.. Always use a brush and chalky matt low sheen paint for best results.. : ))
