choosing a hearth for my living room fireplace
I am opening up the chimney and installing a black cast iron gas fired stove; pretty much decided to render out the opening - the bricks are not good enough to expose and i'm not keen on that look anyway for our contemporary home. My problem is what to choose as the hearth : marble? slate? limestone? cannot decide on material or colour so would really appreciate some advice please! this is the old look:
The fireplace is going to be raised up so the hearth will "float" about 9" / 250mm above the floor somewhere around where the pieces of wood are in this pic:
The opening is a bit wider than shown here and the stove will stand centrally in the opening. .... so what should I choose for the hearth ?? thankyou!

8 years agoany stone fabricator will have cutoffs suitable for this, for about £200 you could get a really nice cutoff cut to size and polished. black would be a safe choice as it works with any colour scheme.

Comments (8)Thanks again :) Hadn't thought about Christmas! Oops, you're right of course, I will have to grab samples if I can and line them up and see what they look like. We've just had the window ripped out and the increase in light is amazing! This at least means I wont be too worried incorporating red in fear of the room looking too dark. The chair rail is a good idea, I'm assuming it's similar to what I referred to as a dado rail? Wooden trim halfway height around the room? We've just ripped ours off, haha, merely because I wanted to completely change the look of the room. Hmm, maybe I've been premature with that decision, it would have allowed me to add a strong colour and still be able to balance it.... Our children are now grown up, one left home, one back and forwards as attending University so no issues with small sticky fingers. Comments (20)maria galvano thank you, I love them too and make me smile whenever I look at them, I bought them from a Bedouin woman in Petra (Jordan). They remind me of an amazing trip to Syria and Jordan some years ago, travelling independently using public transport and meeting amazing people along the way, both locals and tourists. Loved Petra so much and the local Bedouin people, went back for a second day to have another look around as well as sit and drink mint tea and listen to amazing stories ... and yes, they make my home feel alive as most things in it have some connection to a life lived. Comments (7)Well it looks like a nice bright room so I guess you have so many choices it can get overwhelming. For wallpapers I can recommend John Lewis's own especially if you don't want to spend a lot. 8 years agohi all, as promised (or threatened ?!) here are the photos of my new fireplace. I am still not convinced that the wallpaper on the chimney breast is right and we are thinking of just repainting the whole area white/offwhite. (The carpet and curtains are new). the red in the previous photo above is what was on the wall pre-installation and i was hoping to replicate that, but could not find a plain red paper anywhere! so have gone with red curtains instead. any advice regarding replacing the stripy paper welcome !! thankyou
