Kitchen in the middle

Hi, we are considering an open plan option to have our kitchen moved to the middle between the front and rear reception rooms. My husband is worried about kitchen smells not escaping due to no windows within proximity. Have you had this problem?

Hi, In this instance we used a ceiling extractor Westins ceiling extractor CBU1-X. Hope this helps.

Agree with other comment, if you get a good extactor with a powerfull suction then smells shouldn't be a problem.

Hi @Ollie Chambers ah we still haven’t started the work! Mainly delays due to our indecision! We’re starting February now and have decided to go with the kitchen in the ‘middle room’ and the living area in the 3m x 4.5m extension with sliding doors across. The main issue is still the extraction- it’s not a huge space so hob not too far from doors and as having sliding we can open just slightly and have opening roof windows in extension. We’re also having a ducted extractor fitted which will go through the utility (through ceiling) to outside. This can be ducted for 5metres (reducing by 1.2 for every turn) would be too far for you as yours is larger than ours? It’s going to cost quite a lot and we’re still exploring this as I’m not convinced it’s worth the cost as I guess the further the distance to the opening the more reduced the extraction. We cook a lot so we need a system that works. It’s not perfect I’d much prefer to have a window/outside wall for extraction but we have considered every other option and this one suits us best. I think it will be a case of the doors being regularly opened! I don’t have any floor plans etc but am happy to send you some and update you when the work is complete.

Yes this is exactly what I was thinking, thakyou for creating it in a much more professional package!! It may have been you who made the original suggestion to me actually Jonathan so apologies for dismissing it first time around! The more I've thought about it the more I think its a better solution, otherwise the current dining room will just be fairly redundant and we won't use all of the space. Also really like the position of the downstairs loo you've suggested, but suspect the budget won't stretch to that and its current position will be a compromise we have to accept....

Sorry Mat not sure if I follow. Are you having storage put in by the door? There is no storage labelled on your plans. If so, then visually speaking, the room starts from where the floor starts not from where the wall behind the cabinets starts. So if you have the same distance from both sides i.e. from right wall and from the left cabinet, it will still look symmetrical. Do you see how the room starts from the door of the cabinet and not from the splash back behind the sink? Here the column between the doors looks the same size as the wall next to the cabinets, whereas in reality the wall is at least 60cm wider. Again here the door appears to be in the centre of the room but in reality the wall on the left hand side is much wider because it carries on behind the cabinets. The designer has cleverly placed a T.V. there to stop the eye from noticing the rest of the wall. The same effect can be achieved with floor to ceiling cabinets. Was that what you were asking about or have I gone way off?

Thank you for your responses! The plan is to keep the left living room as is, for it to be the main living room (a bit as above). We also plan to use the current 2 kitchen (left) as a utility room, as it doesn't have a window (and if it did it would be to the side of next door's ie to a brick wall)
