Stair runner/carpet dilema

I have found carpet from Crucial Trading which I adore and would like it as a stair runner as in the picture and I want the same carpet to continue on the landing. Problem I have is there would be about 4.5metres of spare carpet left over as it only comes in 4m. Would it look strange to have a different carpet on the landing? Unfortunately I have no where else to use the left over carpet. Thanks.

I have a carpet shop in Fife, and we've fitted quite a few stairs with runners. The runner doesn't need to be in one piece, it could be cut into strips from the 4m width and joined behind the stair rods. Even if you don't want stair rods (which are purely decorative by the way!) the carpet can still be joined there. Crucial Trading should be able to advise you of a trusted retailer in your area who can measure up and advise you on the best solution for your landing too! Hope that helps, good luck!

Thanks soopdragon for the advice, hadn't thought about using the carpet in that way. I'll certainly suggest this when I find a carpet retailer.

Hi Maggie. We are doing the same but have been fortunate enough to have an interior designer friend who has given us great advice: - Ground to 1st floor stairs: runner with taped sides and carpet rods. This carpet is different to all of the others and finishes at the top step. -1st floor landing, stairs from 1st to 2nd and 2nd floor landing in a dark grey carpet all the way to the edge as far as possible - better for hiding marks, wear etc. These areas don't 'normally' have runners. - All bedrooms except master are in a lighter grey. - Master bedroom in a slightly more luxurious carpet. I hope that helps a little. I really wouldn't worry about having different carpets on the stairs. The ground floor stairs are normally a little more elaborate as this is what you see on entering the house. Good luck with it all.

Hi Claire, what is the floor construction on the floor is it joists? there are different options and I have many years experience of dealing with these types of projects. If you are not sure then take up a section and check whats underneath the floorboards. I haven't checked on the plan yet with regard to sqm of area, however I would be wary of electric underfloor heating as the running costs are extremely high unless you have solar panels. Since you asked about runners OR wall to wall carpet, I thought I would show you something we did to accommodate my husband's desire for carpeted stairs (less slippery), neither of us really wanting a runner, and my dislike of vacuuming risers. Not the best pic since this was taken more to show a couple places they needed to touch up paint, and is a close up of our basement stairs but here you go. I am really pleased with how they turned out, and it ties the flooring on our main floor and upper floor together well. You could of course also do this with a fancier patterned/coloured carpet :)

The landing carpet runner can be 'bound' by any decent carpet shop or even an upholsterer with an industrial machine, OR - with the correct needle and jute binding - you could do it yourself. Good luck.

Hi! It wouldn't be a problem to have a different carpet on landing at all! As long as the carpet on landing is plain, and its colour is one of the stripey runner! Actually, I think it would look better this way, as stripes everywhere could be a little too much! Xx
