Garden design dilemma help
Comments (26)The makeover commences in the morning. Rather than a complete revamp we have opted for a restoration of the status quo. The flags are to be taken up and relayed with the sunken square (formerly an eighties style brick built bbq) raised onto the same level as the surrounding patio. The wooden edging has had its day and is to be taken up, with new edging (as yet unknown) in its place. Some of the shrubs are also going - one or two of them seem to be existing much like Schrodinger's Cat - the foliage lustrous and waxy whilst the substructure of twigs dried out and brittle. It looks to my untrained eye to be dead but possibly this is due to my ignorance of all things horticultural....See MoreGarden - before and before but with sketches
Comments (11)Dear Rachel, Thank you so very very much for your comments - I have uploaded an amended version of the design: "The problem I have with your sketch is that everything is in a straight line and all the planting is shoved up the back. I think by playing around with the orientation and shapes of things you can create much more interest and by having planting closer to the house it will invite you to see what is beyond." So the text above - other comments have expressed similar feedback. I have looked at the diagonals but can’t quite make it work - I think I need to go to pencil and paper - the sketching tools on computer aren’t dynamic enough. As I was struggling with diagonals I went for that curve coming out from the decking (pagoda maybe) all the way down. I’ve also added in the areas of planting. My mother has some gorgeous huge ceramic pots that she is prepared to donate to me so plants will all be grown in things as my soil is not very good quality. "So I’ve roughly sketched a couple of ideas (click to enlarge pics) working from the wall and steps. I would leave the patio by the house as is for now and yes, if it will fit relocate shed to the side, paint it black!” Wonderful, so grateful, love them! "Main feature is the decking or platform area which I think you’d like a pergola type structure? maybe with hanging chair?" Yes, that is the part of the garden that has the sun pretty much all day. It would either be. swing/hammock type thing or sofas - I’m going to do pencil and paper sketches - have done some actually - will scan and upload Also put in a little decked bridge to link both areas. " To define the edges between borders I would use railway sleepers to stop everything looking the same colour but you could use anything you want." I am able to get sleepers from a charity I am involved with but was thinking maybe bricks along the curve? Loving your feedback and ideas - spent the day in the sun weeding and I’ll organise a weeding party when my friends are available which should be pretty soon. Also doing time-lapse pictures to see progress. Thank you thank you once again, so grateful :) Nieko...See MoreIs there a rule of thumb when it comes to garden design?
Comments (16)Hi Colour happy Such as contrasting shapes, contrasting tones (putting light coloured plants/climbers against dark ones, or dark fences), and contrasting temperatures (putting silvery grey plants next to either dark ones or warm greeny yellow ones can look beautiful). I haven’t got as far as actual plants yet - climbers on the pagoda thing (decking area) but also lights - fairy light type things to have on in the evening. Definitely contrast in shapes - slab/slate/planting containers “Also think about the importance of diagonals to create interest, and don't forget height." Very good point - I was thinking of painting the fences black - like the garden that started it all pic - they have gaps in the slats which I don’t think I’ll be doing - I think the fences might have to stay as it but I can paint them and put grids for climbing plants up there Nk :)...See MoreTime to start planning a garden design! Comments (25)Oh my word! Dyson is adorable! so ickle!! Now I wanna find a Rune (his name - like rune stones.. not like Rooney 😂) sized box to put him in. Thanks for the 3rd design! I'm always impressed how you come up with such interesting designs (compared to my rectangle of grass with straight boarders I'd envisioned) I think we still prefer the 1st design in part because Chris want's to keep more of the grass. I'd be tempted though to put some sort of low fence to deter Rune from eating crops so maybe I could put some plants against it and growing up that to help disguise? I think the old paving slabs is the best way forward atm instead of the stones... I never truly appreciated how many stones there were just around the garden... just around on the grass.. close to the house and rubble left from the building work, random ones on the small remaining bit of patio that I think have been kicked in from the driveway... Ironically the pile of new ones all in one place are the easiest to keep him away from! (doing the driveway has also jumped up to a higher priority for the year! 🙈) Does Dyson like your Dyson? (assuming you have one) I managed to terrify him the other day when I tried to clear up some of the bits of grass we'd brought back in with us (despite having a treat at the time!)...See MoreJonathan
