POLL: What's Britain's best building?
London's Walkie Talkie has made headlines for all the wrong reasons, and as of today has officially been dubbed 'Britain's ugliest building'. Now we're not ones to point the finger at anyone's architecture (they're all welcome on Houzz) so we thought as we've found out the 'worst', why not try and see what the best buildings out there are?
We've compiled a (very) short list of some of Britain's most celebrated and beautiful bits of architecture, and we want to hear which you think takes the biscuit! This is by no means a full shortlist, but hopefully it will inspire you to share some of your favourites - just comment below!

8 years agoChoosing mainly old buildings is rather depressing. As for modern architecture Britain has very few World Class Buildings as witnessed by the Stirling prize which they should not award if there isn't a worthy winner. How about the Aquatic Centre

Comments (85)Yes that was one of the issues with our place. Narrow corridors, poorly lit. But by rearranging the access to key spaces, blocking some doors and creating a new double width doorway to the principle room, what was a narrow hallway is now integrated and useful. By converting the large loft, we now have a stairwell lit by two velux windows which also throw light into the heart of the building. Lastly the old underhouse garage is now a studio, glazed with full height blue-grey aluminium windows and a door. Comments (72)Each element is fab, love the steel kitchen units, the open brickwork walls and the stars. However collectively the eye dances around all over the place. The steel against the open brickwork is great. The flooring bothers me as it is shouting for attention against strong core elements. Comments (127)Another vote for Dekton and Sileston Quartz worktops, use them all the time in our projects as so much more forgiving and low maintenance than granite or marble. Agree that Corian is a good option if you have a large island to prevent visible joins, whilst it has other benefits you do need to be very careful when it comes to heat. Vast range of colours and textures in all types nowadays so the type of material shouldn't limit the effect you want to achieve - be that traditional or contemporary. I am always a big advocate that a worktop is an investment, there is no point spending a large sum on a beautiful quality kitchen and then finishing it off with a worktop that won't stand up to time as well as the rest of the room or cheapen the look - I always recommend to go for the best you can afford....See More

8 years agoThe Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, by Foster + Partners
- The Sainsbury Centre is an art gallery conceived as one single space, filled with light. At each end of the building, floor to ceiling windows open the space up to the surrounding landscape. It was built in 1978, and is an amazing building, still providing a wonderful experience.

8 years agoHas to be Liverpool metropolitan Catherdral, designed I believe to represent the crown of thorns, affectionately known as Paddys Wigwam. As the top circular piece is entirely stained glass the coloured light fills the space. It is the most ethereal building I have ever been in.

8 years agoThese are all great buildings, but with the exception of the Shard, are all very traditional. Personally, I would like to see more contemporary examples: the Lloyds Building; Sainsburys in Camden, or my personal favourite, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the UEA outside Norwich. A very peaceful, calm and relaxing space.
