Mix and match sofa ideas

After various stressful trips to lots of sofa shops we are still no closer to what sofa to go for. These are our ideas:
A grey material chesterfield which has proved very difficult to find and mix it with a different sofa in a similar shape and a different shade of grey. Has anyone seen this done before?
The second idea was to get a traditional tan/brown leather chesterfield and team this with a material sofa. But again I just can't picture it and if a traditional chesterfield would fit in a modern living room.
The house has been built in a cottage style but the living room is very open and spacey with a brick chimney breast and log burner. I can't help think brown leather chesterfields should be in cosy cottages with beams and striped floors.
Help please!!!!

I must admit I love a Chesterfield and think they are the most adaptable piece of furniture as they fit with so many styles. I've got one in a "soft" industrial room so not restricted to cottages! Have you thought about having the sofa with accent chairs? Or you can also match different styles and colours of sofas by tying in the different colours with cushions . Do you have a picture of the room and people can suggest what would work with the layout?

Oh I love a Chesterfield and if its in tan leather or velvet even better !!! I think you can definitely work one in a more modern setting, you could always mix it up with two armchairs if you are struggling to find a sofa you like.

Are you completely set on the Brompton from next? I don't think it goes with the rug. The rug is very ethnic-looking and informal. The sofa has a very tradition shape. Something more informal and squidgy would work better. Colour-wise along the lines of what you picked would work nicely. I would lean towards a natural fabric, e.g. linen to achieve a more coherent look.

Thank you for all your really helpful comments so far. My eyes are being opened to different thoughts and design ideas. I have loaded a few more photos from the day as it shows the light. The patio end is south facing bit we have a conservatory and some trees behind which reduces the light on the room. as you can see I do have lots of ornaments which I would want to keep and whilst I might have the odd piece to reflect the colour of the room I do t think this room is one to do from scratch and therefore a design idea needs to be around my bits. I have previously changed the botanical flower print as it was once another colour. As the room is long and thin it is quite hard to find an alternative layout which allows us to view the tv as well as entertain and see each other. Carolins I am loving all your ideas and today am going to visit a fabric design shop to see if I can get ideas there. I spend hours going through shop websites looking for cushions/ curtains / lamps as ideally I wouLd like ideas/links to products if possible. I am thinking of painting the wall a more neutral colour? Maybe something like Dimity from farrow and Ball, but from a cheaper supplier? please keep the ideas coming I am so grateful for all your help thank you so much! It’s like you can read my mind!! Yes, a pop of orange in cushions plus maybe a dark blue chair? and blue/grey on the walls. The rooms are quite big (8m x 7m kitchen, 8m x5m drawing room separated by 1.8m corridor) so the plan is to have dado height panelling in vaulted entrance and hallway with the whole fireplace wall panelled in drawing room. White of course!! Stairs are going to be walnut and white with wrought iron spindles and white panelling up the side. Do you think I’d get away with painting hallway a warmer greige colour as it’s north facing and I don’t want it to feel too cold. Love the idea of a vintage Georgian piece, genius. This is our dream home which we’re building mostly ourselves and we’ve been renting for 5 1/2 years to make it a reality so I want to try to get it right even though I don’t know what I’m doing and just keep liking lots of Houzz photos

Hello Kerri,

Yup! I too am a huge fan of the beautiful Chesterfield.. Sadly I don't have one.. Charcoal Velvet is a favourite or a earthy colour such as the one below.. but I too agree this style sofa is so versatile you can easily make a fantastic look to your room. Team it with a wingback or another lovely armchair.. . : ))
