Do I need a designer or an architect for my kitchen?

We are planning a kitchen renovation project, and want to go with British Standard as the kitchen supplier, as we like the quality for the price. However, they do not offer a design service, and we're not totally confident that we can produce detailed enough plans for the building works.

We are having trouble finding kitchen designers who aren't trying to sell a particular brand of kitchen. We have a general idea of layout, but need advice on what will work best in the space. We've been advised by one potential builder to contact an architect which they recommended, and by another to hire an interior designer.

We are wondering which is the best route for the project. It does need some minor structural work (taking down a wall and maybe ripping out and replacing the porch to the rear of the kitchen), but nothing major that would require planning permission.

Any thoughts?
