I would start with her bedroom, that's the area she wil rest. Keep it neutral and and peaceful. Make the curtains cheerful that will be the first thing she'll see when she wakes up. A four feet bed will be comfortable for her and find out how much it will cost to raise the bed ...at a certain age it is more comfortable to get in and out of. Table lamps which by a touch will light up a big alarm clock... Older people always want to know the time! Two bedside tables. Soft carpet for her feet and a big collage on the wall with photos of her family. I would get rid of the wardrobe is is so huge and if you look on your local ebay and put you postcode in you will be able to get a good bargain. Look for a comfy chair too with a floorlight for reading. If space a nice little table (local ebay) will make it complete. Your mum prefers her wall painted but again a roll of cheerful wallpaper for one wall in her bedroom will make it special for her. Try to get rid of all the clutter like those two shopping trolleys perhaps in a cupboard in the hall? I have done a lot of houses up on a shoestring and it is a challenge but can be so satisfying. One thing I have learnt ....ALWAYS finish one room completely before going on to the next room. It helps when you feel a bit down about the project and one look in the finished room gives one a big boost to continue!!! Good Luck.

What colour walls to go with red blinds in living room

Make the blinds disappear by painting the window wall the same red. Otherwise they will look a bit 'bitty'. You can also pick up the red with assessories and introduce other colours also with artwork. I think lots of cream or natural linen. IKEA do a lovely striped sofa which has a thin red stripes which would give it a French country feel. Sorry I don't like the brown leather sofa and after reading how leather is mass produced I am now having problems with any leather sofas :(

I worry that the quoted £60k will leave you with a warm safe house with a new kitchen….. but no floor coverings, no window treatments, no light fittings and no furniture. So perhaps the thing to do is cost up all those finishing jobs and then see what’s left for the builder. You might conclude that some of the wardrobes and bedroom carpets can stay at least for a while so that you can concentrate budget on rooms you are going to use more. (That flowery bedroom carpet is probably still in amazing condition and the fancy panelling on the wardrobes can likely be stripped off for a more contemporary look). You should also prioritise the heating and wiring and any repairs. You should also do all the dusty jobs now….. so I would probably put a door into the kitchen opposite the front door, and take down the internal wood cladding. I would probably strip out the skirtings, architrave, doors and banisters and replace them all with new as the originals will need significant time and effort to get looking good- plus your new wood floors will have tidier edges if you put the skirtings on after the floors are laid. And although on other another thread there has been some discussion about the total costs of some of the jobs I suspect that there is an economy of getting it done quickly and moving in.

Hi everyone, Long time no see, hope all is well. Sorry was busy with work and stuff Just an update, wrt the above topic, I wrote to the Building Regulations, for the Birmingham Council. Which I believe is being handled by Acivicogroup As you know I wish to refurbish the house. Takedown the wall between the dining room and the kitchen (non-weight bearing wall) and insert an RSJ there. Also change the Georgian glass roof of the conservatory, to an all year roof. Besides a complete re-wire, new central heating and a combi-boiler This was the response from Acivicogroup, which is cut and pasted below --You will only need Building Regulations for the roof to ensure the right insulation is used. There is no need for Building Regs for a non-load-bearing wall and you will only need Building regs for the boiler and rewire if a non registered person is undertaking the work. So as long as you have someone who is Gas and Electric registered then just their certificates will cover the work.
