How to protect oak floor from metal dog crate?

We want to put the metal exercise pen we use for or dog when we are out In corner of our family room. What can we place under it that would protect the hardwood floors from the the metal panels and be aesthetically pleasing for us (and the dog)?

Above is the area and since there is a HVAC outlet in the floor there, we will need to cut into whatever floor cover we use.

Below is the pen in its carton. We used it inside before , but in a tiled area where we didn't have this wood scratching risk.
