Guest bedroom

I am having a nightmare trying to choose a design for my guest bedroom. I need colours or designs for a standard double room

Any help would be greatly appreciated

What sort of a feel do you want to create - light & airy, warm & cosy, dramatic etc? How much light does the room get and what direction does it face? What is the flooring and furniture like?

Looking for a bright and airy feel, it gets a good amount of light its north facing. The flooring can be changed if need be at the moment it's tan colour carpet

Picking up on some of the lovely items that you have in that room. I'd keep the Chest of Drawers, the armchair, the hare cushions etc. You also have great stripped pine doors with black knobs, very nice. Going with a soft white on the walls, it will look good with your wooden furniture. Stay away from the modern chrome curtain pole and curtains and other small modern items that don't go in a traditional room, such as the bedside lamps. The mirror needs a much chunkier frame. I'd go for something like this:- As your room is north facing, i'd go with off white on 3 walls with a feature dark wall behind the bed.

The book case could work well at the foot of the bed, but I would pare down the contents so it's not so crowded. We all love looking at those bedrooms with beds that look so snuggly - so a thought could be to plump up the bed clothes. When buying doona, douvets or whatever, purchase a size bigger than the bed - double bed, queen size doona, or even a king size over a double. That will give plenty of drape over the sides. Some texture could be good, notice Sonia's pics show lots of varying texture? The throw blanket could be a deeper mauve, pink in a big knit or a soft velvety mink. You could pick up a richer blue or again the mauve in an extra pillow or two. The pillows could be in different lofts (ie side sleeper, back sleeper, firm, soft etc) which would give guests a pillow choice. These sort of extras don't need to be expensive, so keep an eye on the bargain sales! I would suggest staying with material lamp shades to keep softness in the room. Wood side tables will be enough of the natural element. As there is a lot of wall space and it sounds like it might take some convincing to get art onto the walls, tall bedside lamps would help fill the wall space along with the headboard. The best height to go for would be a lamp which illuminates down onto the bed so reading would be comfortable. So it might even be higher than the bed head you are thinking of. Again, they don't have to be expensive - just make sure they meet the height needed.

It's good there's plenty of light, North facing rooms are notoriously difficult to decorate. Northern light is very cool, so it's best to stay away from cool colours like grey, blue and blue based greens. White can feel gloomy with northern light too, choose colours with a creamy yellow base or red based, you need the colour to have warmth. Have a look at Dulux Timeless Classics - there's some lovely colours and quite a few warm tones. A pro on here has recommended the colour Bone China in this range. I'd keep the bedding a plain crisp white but then add colour with a throw and cushions - lovely ones on White company but not cheap. Keep the curtains white or pale linen in a lightweight fabric and add a blind for the practicalities of sleeping. It might help you to create an ideabook by looking through the photo section on Houzz.

You already know what feel you want to create so you are one step closer! Have you decided on the style you would like the bedroom to feature? Is it contemporary or modern? A mix of styles?
