Wooden worktop for racing green kitchen?

We are having a very dark green wooden kitchen made (along the lines of F&B Studio Green) and I'm looking for the right wooden work surface to go with it.

I LOVE the colour and character of the iroko one in the picture below, but I understand it will get much darker as it matures and I don't want too dark a wood as I'm worried it'll make the whole kitchen feel gloomy.

Does anyone have any recommendations they could share with me? Nothing else really seems warm enough or has enough character, and I don't really like the light woods such as maple or ash which would probably work well!

Fyi, I'm complementing the green with bronze / copper taps, handles, etc and a copper antique glass splashback.

I'd welcome any thoughts or advice..

Hi,

You could try elm or oak - both warm colours but not as dark as iroko. They're much more environmentally friendly than iroko too, because they're not imported...and you'd be supporting UK timber growers.

My kitchen is similar to the one in that picture and we've had oak worktops. Even though we also opted for a caramel bamboo flooring the room is still very bright as we've kept everything else neutral. It depends on the light and shape of your kitchen, but a dark worktop won't necessarily make the room gloomy.

Thanks again Deirdre ... oops ... I overlooked your question about the direction! The kitchen is south facing so it should be ok. I know what you mean about grey being a cleaner look and I do love it with white but was just thinking that it may all look too stark. Having said that I do have floor space for a good sized lime green rug that I own and if I had a window blind made in the same colour then perhaps that would work. I also have 3 lime green ceramic pots/vases which I love and they could sit on the windowsill too. That would then be enough colour accent to lift it I think. Oh decisions, decisions ... :) Will post again once I'm in and have done the deed. Thanks to everyone again for your time.

Thanks ‘Man about the house’, we hope to house the boiler, but as it’s non-standard size (it’s a commercial sized boiler) we are exploring doing a bespoke cabinet with a standard door but this depends on the cost! I like the idea of a light and airy kitchen - will definitely explore this. For cabinet doors, am now thinking perhaps f&b ammonite coloured doors but worried that grey won’t be in fashion in a few years so perhaps looking at colours that are more classical/light such as f&b old white or James white. Currently testing these colours on our kitchen wall! Will post pictures when am home.

Wood at kitchen companies is often expensive (it is where I work). So find some planks yourself. I've used a 45 year old solid oak table top for our bathroom vanity (my husband ate his first sandwiches on). Sanded it down and put some clear laquer on it. There were probably no trees replanted for the table back then, but repurposed is just about as green as sustainably grown.

Love your kitchen, you’ve done a great job, not only does the kitchen look good, it’s totally practical, drawers are the way forward, even if they are more expensive than cupboards. I’ve just redone a kitchen in a house we rent out, the old one was finally falling apart. I was going to go to Howdens and use the joiner etc we knew, but in the end we used a small local company, which cost us £300 more, but the quality of their interior cabinets and doors was so outstanding, plus they could do everything, including tiling, we went with them. We didn’t change the floor, but did everything necessary, I’m hoping it lasts well and our tenants look after it!
