contemporary ideas for odd shaped garden

Hi all
Recently bought this property. Has an odd triangular shaped garden. No real feature. Has two conservatories. There is one between garage and house not shown on Ariel shot. North facing garden but the top right hand get sun till late. Ground has a slope towards the house.
We are not big gardeners- low maintenance preferred. We plan to put in a shed behind garage and also move the hot tub there.

All your valuable ideas welcome.

Do you need two conservatories? Selling the one on the side would give you a bit of extra cash to do up the garden. Are the patio and hot tub currently in the right place to catch the sun? I'd tend to bring them into a more central position. Perhaps also some sort of cooking area might be useful. Plant-wise get rid of the lawn and thin borders and look at dry garden and gravel garden schemes. Will be some work initially but pretty low maintenance thereafter

Thanks for your comments. I should have explained by "low maintenance " I meant plants etc that doesn't need too much attention. We don't mind mowing the lawn. The hot tub is not in a great location now so will definitely need moving.
As a first step I am considering painting the fence panels slate grey.

Hi. I think you have to arrange it so there are two separately zoned areas - but it can look cohesive. You need flexibility and ample room to be able to walk around the furniture for access to the doors. Do you use the fireplace? Assuming you do, I would suggest an L-shaped couch with the L under the window to the left of the fireplace and the back of the couch in front of the french doors to the outside, built-in bookshelves/TV on the long wall to the right of the french doors, a large rug in front of the couch with coffee table, an armchair facing the couch on the other side of the fireplace and then a separate sitting area - two chairs and a little table - in front of the large window. If you have something to look at out there, have the chairs face out, if not, have them face in. If you keep all the furniture with a low profile and similar colour scheme and have the chairs and armchair easily moveable/slidable then you can pull all the furniture up together when you have large numbers of people sitting around the fireplace or watching the TV. Lamps can be added at the end, but probably one in the corner next to the smaller window and then one or two down the other end near the large window. The current path doesn't go anywhere! However I like your idea of a sitting area at the far end if the garden as it is likely the sunniest part of the garden. I would cut the lawn into a circle and get the path to follow the edge- this way you won't notice the shape of the garden. Try to add garden mirrors to reflect light and a water feature to provide a nice noise distraction.

We have a large front garden yes - but wouldn't really sit out there. Patio slabs can stay but happy to move/re-do its not huge area so not ££. We are going to move the bins down the side - its hard as that is our drive so there is not alot of room. But deciding to sacrifice drive for more garden as I love a garden even if it is a small space! sounds good like the idea of raised decking was thinking about that to add interest / might make it look bigger. Thanks again Tani, it's actually the dining room that is the conservatory. It was another 10k to go further out, which we just don't have, and like Carolina we actually quite like the shape. Carolina; we had thought about that, but currently the middle room ('snug') is a playroom and we've created a utility space under the stairs opposite the cloakroom. The front room is the grown up lounge and has the TV in it. We were looking to create a space that would work for when we have friends over to sit, eat, cook etc so we weren't separated. Will have a good look at the link you've posted :)

Triangular plots are fun to work with. If you have a design that follows the angle of the boundary you will only accentuate the angle. You can disguise the angle by doing your design in either straight lines or curved shapes with planting to disguise the awkward angles. A strong design will dominate the space and take the eye away from the triangular plot. If you use straight lines, make sure they run perpendicular to the house, not the boundary. If the lines follow the triangle they will accentuate it. Also the design needs to make the thinner sections feel wider than they are - the knack is to visually lead the eye from one area to the other within the garden. Also to make an area feel larger than it is, make two or three separate spaces in the garden. With the garden divided into 'rooms' you will be able to make each area seem longer/wider and each part of the house will have its own garden view.

I hope this helps. Draw the space on to a piece of paper and have fun with shapes cut out of different coloured pieces of paper. Have fun and you will end up with an outdoor space to enjoy. If this sounds too awkward, employ a garden designer.
