New Built House! How to decorate.

Hi,

I have just bought our first house and I have no experience in decoration and choosing furniture for the house. Where should I start?

So far, I have bought the flooring for the whole house.

Its a dark laminate flooring in the hall http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/schreiber-red-river-flooring-hickory-173m2-236165

and the lounge and upstairs is the lighter more natural looking laminate flooring http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/schreiber-appalachian-laminate-flooring-hickory-173m2-236164.

All walls are white in colour and I need help choosing the colour for walls and choosing a sofa and wardrobes.

In terms of furniture, I only have a http://www.marksandspencer.com/hastings-ivory-bedstead/p/p22139681 King size bed for our room.

I have four bedrooms. 2 double beds and 2 box beds. Only me and my Husband are living in the house. so we are thinking to making 1 double room our room the other double room as guest room (thinking of this bed http://www.sleepsoftly.co.uk/bedsteads/fabric-bedframes/upholstered-ottoman-storage-bed). 1 box room as the study and may be with a single bed and the last bed as a dressing room with cupboards. What is your opinion?

Hello Trisha,

If it's a new built house maybe you would want to go for contemporary style interior. I would suggest you to make a moodboard where you put down all your ideas, favourite colours and texture, furniture pieces you like, accessories and decoration. This way you will save money by avoiding spending money on unnecessary things. You will be able to develop your idea and come up with a great concept. Let your home reflect your personal taste and style.

I agree with minnie about the curtain fabric. Very elegant. Not so keen on the wallpaper. Two points: I think the valance boxes for the curtains are too heavy and bring down the room. What is it like underneath? Could you remove them to lighten the look (or shorten the box)? Second, have you considered having a different wallpaper? Certainly I don't recommend painting over wallpaper - so far, it never works and you see the seams if not immediately, over time.

It sounds like you've got a few great ideas covered already :) Maybe also look at the materials used ie lime plaster, hardwood, chalky paint finishes etc. Choose door furniture, lights and sockets that are appropriate. Would beams suit the style of architecture? Look at deep doors rather than modern ones. I think the interior style will also be important to add character, lots of rugs, art, books etc, maybe mix in a few antiques with new furniture. Lots of texture for cushions, throws etc with traditional window dressings and choose the colour palette based on the scenery? A traditional shaker style kitchen with a natural stone worktop, butlers sink etc . What are the style of windows? Sounds like a fantastic house btw :)

Dear Ribena Drinker...thank you for response. Happy to share pictures of the living room. For colors - I currently have a light shade of grey rug and 1 Sofa. An old truck box as a coffee table. I would love a little bit of bright colors to give some vibrance. Not so much of natural light hence I was thinking of getting a Mural wallpaper such as the below to add to one side of the living room Yes I have just one Sofa & one coffee table.
